Is it crazy to have 2 different iron models in your set?

I’m a high handicap golfer who’s been using 30 year old hand-me-down irons since I started golfing around 4 years ago. I just came into some callaway steelhead XR irons (7-PW) with true temper XP 95 steel shafts. I was looking to round out my set with at least a 6i and 5i (maybe even 4i too). I have an opportunity to buy Callaway Rogue (not Rogue X) 4i, 5i, and 6i from my buddy at next to nothing. From what I can tell from the specs, the lofts, lengths, and lies of the Rogues are the exact same as the steelhead XRs. Realistically, is having two different models of irons going to mess with my game? Are the two models that different? I know it would be better to get the same clubs but it’s a little out of my budget right now. Thanks for the help.

Not at all, many guys on tour have different long irons than shorter ones. If you hit them well, who cares. Not all that different from a 'combo set'. Can usually pick up single irons on Cally PreOwned, so can add as time goes if decide like one more than other.

Combo sets are a great idea! More forgiving long irons, a little help in the middle of the set, less help and more feel in the short irons...or whatever you want.

Look at most manufacturers‘ offerings now, they’re aiming at this exact scenario.

It certainly doesn't bother Tom Lehman or Bernard Langer. Those two have notoriously cobbled together different sets and different brands.

Lots of combo sets out there, and more on tour these days as well. Mickelson has even had 3 different iron models within his set.

Sounds like a great set, you may notice subtle differences between the two models. Of course, the Steelhead XR is more classic looking, and Rogue is very modern. They even did the old hollowed out hosel on the Steelheads. Stock SW on the Rogue is 1 pt heavier than the Steelhead XR, but maybe the shafts are the same(?). Perhaps most importantly, the Rogue looks “friendlier” at address, with a thicker top line and more offset. This is usually the point of a blended combo set, to have a bit more control in the scoring irons and greater forgiveness in longer irons.

I’d say get the Rogue’s from your friend and enjoy. When your cap comes down, you can get fit and invest in a new set.

Nothing different then replacing the #4 and #3 with Hybrids, they are not "irons heads" at all, so its nothing wrong with your thinking...BUT just make sure those heads is in the same category as your irons...

Example, we DONT want "blades" in the long end, and game improvement cavities in the short, but we might use game improvement heads in the long end and blades in the short, so just make sure those heads is a "natural" extension to your irons with the same or more forgiveness, never the other way.

You might want to look into Matbys play-ability factor to make sure they fits in that end, DONT look at his "summary", but look at VCOG and RCOG, The long end should have heads with the same or lower VCOG and the same or longer RCOG than the "short end", and it want hurt if MOI value is higher in the long end. http://ralphmaltby.com/maltby-playability-factor/

I am going to experiment with PXG 4-6 & Fourteen (solid 1-pc forged CB) 7-PW. Shafts aren’t matched (Steelfiber 95’s in the PXG & Roddio 85’s in the Fourteens). A Frankenstein setup on paper for sure but we’ll see how they play in real life.

Other than wedges I've always had the same model irons. I've seen lots of mixed sets - one model club for low irons and another for the rest (but from the same manufacturer). I can't recall seeing different brands (other than wedges). To each his own however.

I think it crazy not to have more forgiving long irons than your mid and short irons. If you can hit a blade 3-4-5 iron consistently you are a rare breed.

I have Mizuno JPX Hot Metal 900s 4-7 and JPX Forged 919s 7-GW. I will change out the 7 iron depending on the course and how I'm feeling.
