Wilson staff Model blades versus Ben Hogan Icon irons??

I seriously doubt any difference at all.

I play the Icons and they're surprisingly forgiving for a true blade. The Wilson's could be just as good but I can promise you they won't be any better. Either iron you choose, you can rest assured that you'll have the best looking irons on the course that day.

Unfortunately Britt or whoever is doing the MPF ratings for RalphMaltby.com hasn't broken down the Hogan Icon, but the Wilson has a pretty high MOI rating but a fairly high Center of Gravity so I guess it depends on what miss you need forgiven, lol

3 rounds with my new Staff blades and love them. Butter soft and no harshness whatsoever. Mishits are not noticeable as one would think of with true blades. If there’s such a thing as forgiveness in a blade, the Staffs possess it. I’d demo both if possible. With the right shaft for you, couldn’t go wrong either way.

Just want to comment on this older thread.. I've played most of this season with my Wilson Staff Model Blades with DG S300's and love everything about them.. I had MP-20 MB's before that, and 2019 Cobra King Forged MB's before that. Last week I was finally able to order the Ben Hogan Icon demo 6 iron and 9 iron, both with DG S300's in them. I played 9 today with my Wilson's and took along the BH Icon's to get a feel for them. I only hit a hand full of swings with them, but I will admit, I like my Wilson's much better.

Takeaways...

- As others have said, can't really relate forgiveness in blade irons.. both felt similar, slight edge (albeit bias) was to my Wilson's.

- Quality control on the Wilson's was spot on published specs.. the Icon's were supposed to be D4, and they were D5 and D6.5

- Probably not a huge point, but enough that I noticed.. the stock standard size Ben Hogan grip they installed on the demo's felt much smaller than my Wilson stock standard.

- The Icon's leading edge grind is similar to any Srixon.. nice chamfered edge. The Wilson's is just rounded off a touch.

- I would think that the Icon's are just a touch smaller heal to toe than the Wilson heads.

- For the price difference it'd be worth it to try their demo program out for the $20 they charge.. you get to try them out for 14 days from receipt..

Only  drawback for me, and it's purely personal... I don't like colored ferrules, and the red paintfill of the number is not for me. But I can change that out if I gamed them.

I play the Icons, and have demoed the Wilsons.  Admittedly, I really liked the Wilsons and almost bought them, but the price difference swayed me towards the Hogans.  Before them I played the Z745s.  A forgiving players CB so I was a little worried about the size reduction of the Hogans.  It has been a non issue in any club, besides maybe the 4i, that one can be a little more demanding... not gonna lie.  The rest of the set has been so much better than I had ever thought they could be and way more forgiving than I had expected.  One advantage I think the Hogans have is the black finish, another option I couldn't pass up... I have about 7 rounds in and a couple range sessions and they are really holding up well while also keeping the glare away... I didn't think it would matter but the black heads really look good outside and frame the ball nicely.  I don't think there is much difference in most blades, you're going to have to be a decent ball striker at best but the Hogans and Wilsons have to be some of the more forgiving options overall.

While I can't opine on the specific clubs in question (so my post may or may not be invalid), when I bought my new clubs this past summer, I was presented with Wilson Staff, Ping, and Cleveland irons then Cleveland, Wilson Staff, and Srixon Woods.  I legitimately hit the Wilson Staff offerings the best and the most consistently out of everything I tried.  Don't sleep on Wilson Staff stuff - it's not your dad's Target brand anymore.

Ultimately, I went with what I did (Ping/Srixon) because the Wilson Staff stuff was more expensive, and the shop and I couldn't work out a deal on those.  But I was incredibly impressed with the fit and finish, overall quality, and how consistently I hit everything that I tried from Wilson Staff.

There is definitely a difference in blade designs. Just depends on your miss, if you miss on the toe look for a blade with tungsten plugs on the toe. I play vr pros and nearly missed the grooves toward the toe the other day and still had a good result. If you miss on the heel you’ll want something with a cg more towards the hosel. I can’t speak to either of the designs you mentioned but hoped to inspire you to continue your search.

For whatever reason most of the people that play blades on here are complete snobs. God forbid the words forgiveness and blade are mentioned in the same thread.

Cannot comment on the Hogans because I have not hit them, but gaming the Wilson Staff Model and loving them, also have gamed the Wilson FG62 prior to the Staff Model and I liked them, better than my backup Ping i210s…….love the looks, feel and performance of the Wilson’s………
