Why this gear? 

 

I am a very high launch, high spin player. About 15 years ago I broke my left leg pretty badly and ever since then I've struggled to get my weight through to my left side at impact. I've managed to get down to around +1 so it's not all bad, but those swing dynamics have certainly had a large influence on what you see here.

 

The driver is always an area I'm messing with. As a high launch / high spin player I struggle with ballooning the ball. In 2021 I tried the SIM2, TSi4 and G425 LST. Played the SIM2 for the longest but didn't really care for the feel. I found that the G425 LST still launched too high and span too much for me. The TSi4 for me is now the best balance of distance / feel / forgiveness. It's not as long as the SIM2 but feels way better and is as forgiving if not more so. I'm not 100% sure where people say the TSi4 is not forgiving, I've never had an issue with it. On the shaft front I've tried 2-3 shafts this year; the HULK, Ventus Black and now the new HZRDUS SMOKE Green RDX. The HULK was very stable but didn't feel great. The Ventus black is a great shaft bit I have a relatively quick transition at the top of my backswing and it felt kind of 'soft' under the grip so I went away from that. The HZRDUS SMOKE Green RDX is pretty new to the bag but I feel it gives a good combination again.

 

The 3 and 5 woods have gone the TSi2 route but stronger lofts than I'd like. The idea for me is that they are slightly lower launching but higher spin and get into the window I'm after. The 3 wood has a cut down 70g hulk shaft and the 5 wood is the HZRDUS SMOKE yellow. These are not in my bag 100% as I still feel I can hit them a little cutty and not get that powerful trajectory I'm looking for.

 

The irons have been a revelation in 2021. I've played the MODUS 120 X shaft for a few years now and it's the best shaft I've played. Great combination of feel and stability. The ZX7 is a great feeling head, great turf interaction and easy to turn over left or right. Probably been my best ball striking year with irons. 

 

The Artisan wedges are just a joy. I was scheduled to go for a fitting and then COVID hit. Ended up getting these built over the phone and email and they've done an amazing job. The turf interaction of these wedges is on another level. Hopefully I'll be able to get over to TX in 2022 and they'll be able to fine tune them where necessary.

 

Finally the putter is something which has improved massively this year. Played around with a few but this has been in my bag the longest. The feel is soft and the head stable through impact. I tend to like a heavier putter head so I ordered the 34" putter and play it at 35" to increase the swing weight. I've even added some lead tape just to get it in the right SW for me. I have become very conscious that the SW of a putter has a huge impact on my putting stroke.

 

The ball selection varies a lot on the conditions of the course I'm playing. If the greens are firm and fast I'm play the regular Pro V1x, if the course is soft with slow greens the -Pro V1x will come out and play.

 

Other stuff includes the fantastic Garmin Z82 range finder. Not cheap but I play a lot of different courses and find the GPS overlay incredibly useful for hazards and lay ups etc...

 

 

Going into 2022 I'll start using the Arccos system again. This time I have gone for the built in sensors in Golf Pride Midsize MCC +4 grips. I play the midsize grip as it tends to stop my hands over rotating and the +4 gives me the opportunity to feel like I have more even balance in grip pressure.

Since the last episode, the putter has changed and the bag itself has changed. These two pics show just as much as all of the individual pics. Most of the shafts are stock, meaning the ones in the woods are TM "made for", Ventus Red and Atmos Orange; Tensei Blue in the hybrid; Recoils in the 4 and 5 irons, AMT Reds in the rest of the irons; DG S200 in the 54, and Modus 3 in the 60.

thanks. It’s a bit unorthodox but it works for my game. The 7W and 3i are about the same distance but have very different purposes. The wedges go 47,52,60 which is also a bit strange but the gapping works nicely for me.

I know, I know…I tried a Ping PLD Bruzer and a Vault 2.0 B60 but they just didn’t work.  My putting brain can’t figure out alignment with lines so in goes the 2 ball.  Maybe I should try a Fetch.  On a related note, I am always on the lookout for a Ping Redwood D66 in decent shape hahaha.
