Recommend me new irons to try out.....

Hi all,

 

Got a very unexpected bonus and after some of it goes towards family fun, I plan to treat myself to a new set of irons. I haven't really kept up with any iron developments in the last few years so I am really open to suggestions of what is hot and what to try out.

 

For context, I'm still gaming original AP2's. Handicap moves in the 6-7 range so I am an OK player but not quite a WRX pro. Probably not ready to jump to a blade, quite happy with the players cavity. I do love my AP2s but I'm not a brand fan boi so happy to look across a range of products.

 

Also, any thoughts on if I will notice a real difference on 10 year old AP2's with current tech? Distance, forgivness, launch? Really, I haven't swung anything different since I got them.

The biggest difference will be the increase in lofts found on most new models of irons. Also the shaft options available today will make your head spin. I’m a Titleist fan boy and am not a fan of the current T irons in terms of looks. Srixon 745/785s are the only clubs that have briefly pulled me away from gaming Titleist AP2/CBs in recent years. As most people will tell you Mizuno still puts out some of the best irons on the market. Newer “direct to consumer” companies like Sub70 and New Level Golf are offering quality irons at a fraction of the price of major OEMs.

The question of whether or not you will see in increase in performance from new equipment has been answered thousands of times on this website with a thousand different opinions. The original AP2s came out in 2008, so you are looking at 12 years of tech advancement. Will you jump to a scratch golfer simply by purchasing new clubs? Obviously not. Will you see slight improvements in forgiveness in most players irons offered today? Probably.

Can't really go wrong with Mizuno MP anything, the MP 20's oddly let you get away with some bad shots, combo them up with the HMB's in the long irons and you got yourself a pretty awesome set. The MP 20 MMC's are on sale almost everywhere and those are some sweet irons. Not a blade and probably fall in the same category as the AP2's. The Ping i210's are a little thicker but very nice irons, I was surprised how good they felt for cast. I usually love Titleist irons but lately I find they're becoming gaudy and not as "true" as they once were. That said, The Titleist CB's are much more forgiving now and as simple/sleek as they come! TM P790's are forgiving and look pretty good. I sometimes feel like they look like my old AP2 714's when I look down on them but they're packed with forgiveness, the lofts are definitely stronger though

I've been kicking around the idea of getting some Mizunos. I've gone back and forth between the MP 20 MMC, HMB and JPX 919 Forged. Currently using i500s which I don't think have a lot of feel.

My first instinct based solely on your current clubs is to say to upgrade to the T100S form Titleist. However, if you don't have to have new clubs immediately and can wait until September/October, you might want to hold off and see what the new Srixon and Mizuno JPX line look like.

Of the current Mizuno, you the MMC or HMB both look very nice and would definitely be in your index range.

T100 would be an easy transition.

Check out the 639 CB black irons from Sub70... use the savings to play some extra rounds of golf. They make fantastic equipment that should fit your needs... Just make sure you know what shaft you want... otherwise, go get fit at a good fitting studio if it's available... Spend the time and find the right fit to last you another 10 years.

Yes, they are defo in my thoughts. Had a good watch of T100 reviews lastnight. Looks like it would just be a good upgrade for me.

To be honest, i am kicking myself i didnt get the 718 AP2s, i thought they looked the best of the set. I was lucky enough to play Wolf Creek back in September. The 718 Ap2s were the hire clubs. Played real good with them. Those S300 shafts seemed to suit me. My 10/12 year old clubs are project x 5.5

 

One of my mates got a set of srixons a couple of months ago & he swears by them.

 

Obviously mizunos are always good to look at.

 

Something to get excited about..... just need to make sure i only spend the bonus on them& not dip into the cancelled/refunded family trip to Disney....
