Do you mind if I play some music?

Recommended Posts

Same here. For example, I don't normally drink alcohol on the course. But there are times where golf is more about the social aspect and not about playing a good round. I have no problem having a beer in that setting and wouldn't mind if someone was playing decent music at a reasonable volume.

But most rounds it's no alcohol and I'm trying to play the best golf I possibly can. In those settings music is annoying.

I still like tranquility during golf but now opt for music at times when using a cart. I play Rock & Roll though a Bose speaker and keep the sound relatively low so standing 20' away its barely negligible, if at all. Though I am a courteous person because I am outside I don't ask others if they mind my music, like I don't ask if they mind my cigars. Not one to let the likes or dislikes of others define mine. Just keep your music low enough for you to hear.

People who listen to music on the golf course don't go far enough when asking. They stop at "Hey, mind if I play some music?" Then you think, great now I'm the a-hole if I say no.

The real way to ask is "Hey, mind if I play some music? I will not be the slightest bit disappointed or offended if you say no."

This.

I can't stand music in the course. Part of the attraction of golf is getting out in nature and enjoying some relative peace and quiet. I can listen to music at any other time, including in my car on the way to play.

I wonder about the mentality of people that feel the need to listen to music while playing golf.

• Short attention spans?

• Constant need to be entertained / distracted by something external?

• Uncomfortable with their own thoughts?

I am saying that the member should have spoken up about the music. Member's guest is a guest the club and the 3rd guy is a guest of the twosome (even though he is a member). When I host a guest I want it to be him and me and not get a 3rd random that may detract from my guest's experience, be it music or PoP or abilty or personality.

Summary:

Guest - as he said, difficult and awkward to tell a member what to do when you are a guest.

3rd guy - should have taken cues from member and guest that there was no music, so he should have kept speaker in bag or put in earbuds.

... I used to hate music on the course but have grown to enjoy it, so I get it. But I was a DJ for a living bouncing from city to city from 71-82 starting in Greenville NC and made my way to Chicago and worked at 5 stations here. All what would be called Classic Rock today, although one short stint at a Country Station was torture until I found another shift at a rock station. So music has a special place for me. I always walk and if my JBL is not pointed at you, it is unheard. I keep the volume low although many times my playing operas have asked me to turn it up and I will, to a volume we can hear but nobody else. If I turn my remote controlled cart away from the green no music can be heard. I have also had players say "as long as it isn't rap or country." Amen. Although as someone has said, if I am a single walker paired up with a 2some or 3soms and they have on rap or country I just grin and bare it.

... That said I play mostly as a single and am paired up with others and always ask if they mind a little music. I have only had one person say they preferred to play without music and I completely respected his choice never turning any music on. If someone is going to ask they truly want to know and if they don't and are looking for justification they don't deserve it anyway. But I also had one old fart (I am 67) say he didn't mind then after 18 said "Next time don't play any fu@$%*g music!" I don't have to to tell you he blamed his bad play on my music, bad greens, wind, birds, trucks and anything else but his play. We are sharing a course for 4-5 hours and everyone should be comfortable and respectful of each others choices. Someone smoking on the course and forcing me to breath second hand smoke is infinitely more egregious than someone playing bad music. It is all about respecting your partners.

On multiple occasions I've been annoyed by groups listening to music parked at a green near the next tee box, which I'm on. The music may not be loud to them at the green, but I can hear at the tee box. At the point I'd almost rather it be blaring. Regardless of the volume, it's a total **** move to have your music at a volume/vicinity that someone else can hear it. It may not even be the music itself, but the selfish act that makes it hard for me to focus on the tee shot.

All I can say having read this is that there is a HUGE difference in cultures between US and Europe.

“Someone smoking on the course and forcing me to breath second hand smoke is infinitely more egregious than someone playing bad music.”

This is absolutely wrong, and I hate all forms of smoking.

First, smoking is quiet. Music isn’t. Second, I can choose to stand away from smokers. Music floods the area in all directions. There is no avoiding it.

Nobody is “forcing you to breathe” second hand smoke. Music listeners ARE forcing you to hear their music.

Give me quiet smokers over anyone playing music any day of the week.

I'm just so lucky that of the two courses I play the most we only have one guy who has music on.

Funny, I've never gone into a coughing fit from accidentally walking through someone's music but I have on several occasions when someone's smoke has wafted my way. Try as you might but you will always wind up getting some of that smoke in your face at times during the round. I know, I try very hard to avoid someone's smoke and sooner or later it gets you.

I'm sure I'll offend somebody but I'd rather listen to country for 6 hours rather than listen to Rap/Hip Hop for one song. I apologize in advance to those I've hacked off.

Mr. Bean, you sound like you are a blast to play with. You seem to personify the "grumpy old man" stereotype. You are about as passive aggressive as you can get and are likely why younger folks are not interested in taking up golf. Feel free to stay across the pond if you don't care for US golf.

I'm pretty susceptable to earworm, and it seems like the whole pop music industry is shoving that garbage down our throats with Maroon 5, Charlie Puth, Gwen Stefani etc. Luckily most golfers don't listen to pop but still music can get a bit annoying. Do I want Metallica amping me up for a delicate downhill putt for par? I could try to block it out the best I can but it's still wasted energy and it makes my round, which I paid good money for, less enjoyable. Music can dictate your emotional state, and certain songs I just don't want to ever hear. One genre of music I like is actually Japanese electronic/synth rock, but I wouldn't dare push that on someone else in a million years on the golf course.

... It is amazing some talk like there is a right our wrong answer instead of just personal opinions. I have never smoked anything in my life and abhor smoking on a golf course when I am trying to breathe fresh air and commune with nature. Obviously you feel differently. And again, I play music at a level that cannot be heard unless you are near my speaker and it is aimed at you. Right beside the green, if it is facing away it cannot be heard. I am not a fan of loud music while playing, just some low level tunes in the background while I walk and my partners ride in a cart. And I love playing without music too, so win-win.

Your situation reminds me of one I experienced recently. I don't care if music is played on the course as long as it isn't rap or hip hop but my buddy has rabbit ears and can't stand any noise at all. We played a nice course recently and got paired up with 2 singles. Second tee one of the guys asks would it be ok if he plays some music quietly? I gave the grimace and immediately looked at my buddy. He told the guy he didn't care for music on the course but to do whatever he liked. The guy nicely said no problem, that's why I asked. Rest of the round went smoothly except where the music guy accidentally clacked his putter and wedge together as Mr Rabbit ears was in mid stroke of a putt.........
