Do you mind if I play some music?

Recommended Posts

What you do does NOT define what golf does regarding music. And you need to play more if your going to catch up to my 150-200rds per year. If you're playing in the same high-end private clubs in SOCA I play at - we are likely to cross paths. Unless you're on the BOD, like my friends and I, get use to us making club decisions.

Just say, I have no problem with you playing music as long as I can't hear it.

Can't really go wrong with classic rock at appropriate level. It's actually quite amazing at the ubiquitous popularity of classic rock with people ages 20s to 80's.

Make a simple decision...play golf, or play music. It is banned where I play.

That's possibly a fair point, but not really my experience. I lived in Spain for three years and it became more common. I go to Pinehurst every year and it's common. The caddies even commented on how common it has become there. I did Bandon Dunes three years ago, and am going next month and the same thing. I play regularly in Vegas and Arizona, same.

The one area I dont play is private clubs in the northeast.

I dont think this trend is exclusive to the areas I play.

Yea, I agree with that. But my point still stands. About 15 years ago I used a speaker plugged into a iPod and threw it in the back of the golf cart. Since then, the number of people that use speakers on the golf course has increased slowly and steadily. It's not possible to dispute that. And I don't see any reason that increase will slow down, given the preferences of the demo replacing the outgoing group.

I used to not like music at the course...now, I'm one of them playing it (at a reasonable volume) in my push cart or motorized cart. I don't ask for permission...if someone asks me politely...I'll turn off it off. Not a big deal. Like Pepper...I like cigars on the course as well. I don't ask permission to smoke my cigar unless I'm in a cart with them and they have no escape from me.

Just curious, if you're paired with someone and he/she asked you politely to turn the music off what would you do? I'd be compelled to ask someone to turn it off, but not sure how contentious it would get.

I would turn it down so they couldnt hear it unless standing next to my cart. I'm not a jerk about it at all, but I also am not going to change the way I do things to appease someone. I go out to play golf and enjoy myself. I smoke cigars, I gamble, and I play music. I wear flip flops instead of golf shoes. And I do all of this at nice courses.

Music has become quite prevalent at our course, sign of the times, might as well find some you like and buy a bluetooth speaker.

... I think most of us fall somewhere between Judge Smails (Pepprturbo) and a young Rodney Dangerfield (rzitup). Golf has always been a game of respect and while generations have a different idea of exactly what that is, I think most are accommodating to those they play with regardless of age. As I said I like music and I like playing with no music BUT I like certain kinds of music and not others and under those circumstances it is best to play without. The "I'm going to smoke/play music whether you like it or not" has to be the rare exception or of course the forum troll.

I would be very surprised if this happened in the next decade or so. There might be many similarities in various aspects of our respective cultures, but the divide between US and UK golf culture is huge and even something like WHS, maybe conceived to bring the cultures closer together in one aspect at least, is only serving to show the fundamental differences of both approaches.

Interestingly post Covid lockdown there has been a huge boom in traditional golf club membership as opposed to the pay and play concept which has gained ground in recent years, this alone will prevent the spread of ‘music golf’. I do not know of any club that would allow it, it doesn’t figure in any club rules as I have never heard of anyone asking to play music so there is no need to outlaw it.

You of course took what I said out of context.

Listening to music is allowed on every course I play/have played. Therefore I am going to listen to music regardless of the people I am randomly paired with. I will of course turn it down if they ask, and try to not to disturb them, but I am not going to turn it off.

Smoking cigars on the golf course is allowed on every course I play/have played. Therefore I am going to smoke my cigar regardless of the people I am randomly paired with. I will of course try not get the smoke near them, but I am not going to not smoke.

If someone asks me to turn off the music, stop smoking or put golf shoes on I will tell them no. Why would I not do something that is allowed?

@rzitup. On this DB lots of shallow minded people take words out of context to argue a poorly structured ideal. First and foremost, this is a free country. As I said earlier, I enjoy playing music low, cigars, plus driving really fast among other things that go bang. We can agree on one thing; if there are no course rules stating no music or smoking, go right ahead and enjoy and say "no" to anybody that attempt to push their wishes on you. I do. Play well and enjoy.

... Plenty of golfers would ask "mind if I smoke?" or "mind if I play music?" and if the answer is "I would prefer you do not" they would gladly refrain. You are sharing a space in nature for 4-5 hours and simple common courtesy should be a given. There are basically 2 types of people in this world, those that are considerate and those that are inconsiderate.

When talking about smoking cigars in an analogy to playing music, there are limitations to both that make it right or wrong. If I were smoking a cigar would I allow smoke from my cigar to get into the space of other golfers? Absolutely not, at least not on purpose. Music is the same, as some people find music offensive that gets into their space. Why not keep the music in your own space? In other words, turn it down so only you can hear it.
