Do you mind if I play some music?

Recommended Posts

Everyone claims to play music that only they can hear. And yet I hear music on the course all the time. And everyone thinks they have good taste in music. Yet I hear music I think is crap all the time. What's up with that?

And as noted earlier, if you truly are playing music at a low volume, why play it at all? You certainly aren't getting the proper audio experience. Is getting nothing more out of a song than being able to recognize it at the volume you're playing it at satisfying to you?

Here's another question, if music is so important to you, why not just wear ear buds where you can get excellent sound and not bother anyone else?

I just thought of some alternatives for the next time that someone asks if I mind if they play music:

1) Bring my own speakers and say "I don't mind if you play some music as long as you don't mind my death metal cranked to 11."

I'm sure no one would mind this:

2) Or bring my own earbuds to play Mozart and say "No problem with your music, I'm going to pop my earbuds in. Talk to you when the round is over."

@GeorgeHWB: Here's another question, if music is so **** important to you, why not just wear ear buds where you can get excellent sound and not bother anyone else?
Here's the answer: In @rzitup's case, he's not really interested in listening to the music, he wants to antagonize other golfers because he's a self-centered jerk.

I started playing in Rock bands in 1964 and quit in 2009. I've been a audiophile my whole life. Point is, I love most music. But the importance of playing music while golfing to some people is just something I can't understand.

While I don’t mind music being played on the course, it seems like a golf course is the last place I’d expect people to be playing over a speaker?

It’s mind boggling that someone thinks “I paid for my round...” then doesn’t stop and think that everyone paid for their rounds.

Imagine going to a restaurant and setting down your boom box on the table and playing something obnoxious to most, because “It’s your right” and you “Paid for your meal”?

Some of the responses are quite surprising. There’s a big difference between “rights” and “entitlement”.

Our regular Sunday morning dawn patrol group started playing music this year. I actually like it, but I have been a big music fan my whole life. We would definitely turn it off if someone had a problem because it's not a must have thing for our group.

I grew up and learned to play in the traditional country club scene of the 80's, so a stuffy golf environment is the norm for me. I don't like playing with people who act crazy and yell across the fairway all day at each other, but I like playing with people who can relax and have a good time playing golf.

Life is too short. Have fun and play as much golf as you can.

If you want to listen to music on the course and not disturb anyone else, while still being able to hear what is going on around you and have a conversation, this is the solution: AeropexMy wife and I each have a set and they are great for morning jogs and bike rides (allow you to hear the music but also ambient noises like cars coming or other joggers/cyclists), doing chores at home (so you can hear the kids screaming at each other in order to break up the fight), etc. They produce sound quality that is at least the same, if not better, than most Bluetooth speakers, and even cranked up at their highest level, someone standing next to you can't make out what you are listening to. On the golf course, they'd be excellent because you can listen to whatever you want without bothering anyone and you'd still be able to carry on a conversation with your playing partners.

Also, this song, aside from being one of the best vocal renditions I've ever heard, is a pro pos.

Memememememememememe. What is else is there? We have some that claim it’s there right to blast. The heck with everyone else. We have one that says he plays music and smokes cigars on the course but cannot imagine why the club has music on the range. And goes off in a tangent about the young and their cell phones.

What ever happened to civility and caring about others? I do not call the poster but one idea of belting out show tunes during the music players swing and putt had the right idea. Seems like they should enjoy your fine singing voice. If they don’t that is just their tough luck.

So true, and I could picture people starting to escalate volumes with ever growing wattages to hear their own music over others.

At some point, golfers could end up violating city noise ordinances. Old Tom’s zombified remains would come back to eat the brains from loud golfers. Hahaha.

So what you are saying is just because you have the right to do something... doesn't mean it's the right thing to do and that doing something selfless and just for someone else's sake might be the right thing to do in some situations? Well I... well uh... that's just bat sh *t crazy talk!

(And yes of course, this can apply either way depending on the situation!)
