Forged blanks? (MBs)

Does anyone know if any of the Japanese companies offer forged blanks at a discount? Looking for ready to play raw heads only. No finishing, no stamping, and I don't care who makes them as long as they are authentic.

Closest things I've found is a set of raw Kyoei MBs 4-PW on Tourspec for pretty cheap, but they need grinding. I bought these (currently game them) and found a fitter to grind them down for me at a decent additional cost locally. Alternatively, they also offer a set of black CBs (not sure if they're Kyoei either) as well, though I've personally not dealt with them, so I'm not sure if they need more TLC.

I saw those but the black heads that don't require grinding are still very expensive. Seems like a blank should be available as most companies offer a standard MB that all look the same.

Kyoei manufactures for many companies from what I remember, and they have the best online presence through TourSpec. You might have to go ask some golf shops in your area to see what's available. For example, I know Artisan uses wedges that are pre-manufactured, but they do grinding and finishing, similar to the raw Kyoeis. Beyond that though, if you do find out, please update as I'd also be interested in something like this.

Yeah I think National Custom Works gets blanks from a Japanese company but I don't know how individuals can get them.

Well made forged head blanks are not going to come cheap.

Coming back to this - check out Corey Paul Functional Art. If you're looking heads only, ready to use, he's got it albeit the price may not fit your bill.

Awesome info man looks like a 4-pw set is $1050 but they are beautiful. I really wish I could find a set for $600ish even like throwaways from one of the forging companies.

Thanks for the suggestion but I wasn't able to find any GEOTech MBs for sale at least on Tour Spec Golf. Looking for that traditional mb head blank at a reduced cost.

Even after translating the page to english I'm not seeing the forged blanks? I see they have some sets of MBs but they all have stamping etc.

I'd appreciate it if you could help direct me to the blanks!

I actually searched and found these myself the other day after watching some youtube vids of the process.

 

There is absolutely no reason that this cannot and should not be done in the US.  Being pretty familiar with the metals industry, including the labor side, availability of material and especially the environmental, health and safety regulations, there is nothing going on there that cannot be done in the US.

 

One thing they say is labor cost, but labor is tied up in the hand grinding.  If the desire is to supply the raw forgings to US folks and companies who are doing that part they have the largest labor component.

 

There is also nothing inherently better by doing this in Japan, aside from the experience of the Japanese shops doing it.  A competent metallurgist and someone with forging or stamping experience and it can all be done here if desired (and capital is available).  As far as hammer forges go what you need to do an iron head is actually pretty small.

 

One major difference I have noticed between the small shops and the "production volume" forging houses is how they treat the initial billet.  The small shops form the hosel shape in the first die.  Production volume type places bend the billet in a curve then hit it in the first forging operation.  I suspect this is partly for speed and partly to reduce flash that is later trimmed and wasted (recycled obviously).  I do not know which method is better or if there is even a difference in the grain structure of the final forging.  I suspect by bending you compress the grain structure in the inner hosel bend and elongate it in the heel area.  Perhaps the density of those two areas become ever so slightly different by doing so.

 

At any rate If anybody has some idle shears, induction heating equipment, hammer forges I'd be happy to be the EHS/Process/Manufacturing Engineer for you.
