Allen Doyle WITB?

Have been fooling around with the idea of playing a hybrid set.

 

Anyone have any pics of Doyle's set up during his hot US Senior Open years?

In the last hour I have googled Doug Sanders and watched his swing, David Graham and watched his swing, and now Allan Doyle. Shortest swings in pro golf?

I'm pretty sure that Allan Doyle had a driver set up with a closed face, so that he could hit is rope a dope draw through thick and thin.

I played with Doyle in the Southeastern Amateur for 2 rounds in the 1980s. Dude was an absolute machine. If I remember he shot 65 and 64 in those two rounds. He missed 1 GIR, and that was by about 2 feet. He didn't even win the tournament. I think Hugh Royer did. Watching this old dude slap draw it up the fairway. Slap draw it on the green. And drain every putt 15 feet and in was incredible ETA I think he's the best amateur golfer of the past 40 years that didn't turn pro early. His tournament results are off the chart. Georgia Ams. Sunnehannas. Southeasterns. Porter Cup. Northeastern. Dogwood. Azalea. Trans Miss. He won damn near every invitational there was. Jay Sigal is the only other that comes to mind.

My longest iron is now a six iron. I used to have a five iron in the bag in summer then switch to hybrid in winter. Allen was ahead of his time in realizing that after the mid irons it is more important to make try making pars vs chasing birdies. His lower trajectory also benefited from hybrids just like mine. He was an efficient player whose tactics and swing held up under pressure. And he could putt. His victory over Watson kind of shut the door on more stories like his since they limited qualifying spots shortly after that for full status. The Watsons of the world don’t want to get beat by the Doyles so the best way is not to have to play against them in the first place.

his quirks and waggling drove most of his peers insane...go to 1:44
