Favorite 2 Iron / Driving Iron Shaft

I like my MP-20 HMB 2 iron in the Nippon 120 steel. The heavier shaft helps with consistency. But I'm thinking about switching to graphite (in the 85g-100g range) to pick up some club head speed. My current setup (at 16 degrees) launches very low, which is fine, but I could add more launch and don't want to go lower.

I would just go right into the Mizuno stock option recoil 95; it’s a nice mid launch and spin result that fits a lot of players.

I still have my 110 version in my Srixon U45.

I like using more a mid launch/low to mid spin profile in my driving irons. Gives it a little more versatility for me when needing to elevate a shot off the turf. It's hard to find, but I've had great success with the HZRDUS Red 6.5 105g. The 85g ones are easier to come by. I've recently switched to the KBS Tour Proto 95x and liking the results. They have several weight options available, too. Both are .370 so will need to be slightly sanded a bit or have the hosel reamed to fit.

have dabbled with the idea of going a little lighter, maybe even graphite, but after using it on the tee of most par 4s at todays club day i think the DG is staying put for awhile yet.

Personally using the KBS Proto 85X with great results in my HMB. Had the Pro Modus 125X in there first, but this has been an upgrade to the speed without losing anything over the steel. Previously had a Callaway UT with AD DI-95X that was also lightweight and very stable. It's very windy here on the coast, so the utility iron gets a workout in most rounds. I've been inspired to look at switching to graphite throughout the rest of the bag.

What shafts are u playing in your driver and 3wood?

I literally just got done at the range and put the first swings on a hmb3i that I put a vts silver in. It flights as high as the hybrid it's competing with. I used the 100g x flex in the hmb3.

@uglande, we have similar bag set-ups, although my shafts are a bit milder than yours.
With the 4W + 7W, you have ability to launch it high when needed. Maybe you want to just stay with Nippon 120 in your 2i? It could be useful to have at least one club that drills it low, just for versatility.

I play KBS c taper lite x in my mp18 hi fli 2 iron. I mostly play it off the tee as a 240 yard fairway finder but I can launch it high when needed.

For the longest time I played PX 6.0 in my 716 T-MB 17* 2 iron. Late last year bought new 620 irons and 718 T-MB 17* 2i, only put Steelfiber i95 shaft in. Use it from the tee and off the deck. A few months later switched to Steelfiber i110g shaft, so far so good, except i95 was a tad longer and slightly easier on transition, only time will tell.

That's definitely the logic of my current setup. Can go low with the 4i and 2i and launch as high as I want with the 7w and 4w. My 2i falls nicely between the two woods. But I also have a TS3 15.0 that is a rocket and I might be putting it back in the bag in place of the 4w, in which case I might want a little more out of my 2i.

I've got Hzrdus yellow 6.5 in driver and 6.0 in fairway woods, although I might be switching to Ventus 7X in FW. The 6.0 is a little soft.

Well, I think we're close in shaft profile types. It may not be a sexy selection but the vts silver I bought can be had uncut for $50 on ebay. 100g x flex out to do it for you.

Ordered a Diamana Thump 115X for my Srixon U65 2 iron. Nice weight and solid trajectory. A real fairway finder for sure, almost automatically 240-245. Pretty point and shoot.

 

only problem was finding a local clubbuilder with an account to order direct from MRC and then the 6-8 week lead time for it to arrive from Japan.

For steel I have really enjoyed the Project X PXI as it lands in a very nice weight range for me and is plenty stable.

For graphite, I have liked the Motore 9.8, Rombax 115i, Recoil 125, and my favorite is the unfortunately hard to find Kuro Kage 100TX. I'm also trying to do something with some Aldila Rogue Black 105TXs as well, just figuring out whether I prefer a more stout, linear profile over the more mid soft designs like the Rogue Black.

Yesterday, a par 5, dog-leg left 2nd shot used 2 iron with 110g Steelfiber "s" shaft. Needed to draw the shot but hit it dead straight. Smacked it so well, found my ball in the next fairway rough which was ugly, took a bogie on that hole. grr. I have to make a conscious effort to choke-down more off the deck, much better contact. Still going to revisit 95g shaft for the extra pop.

ive tried Tensei Pro Orange 90tx and 100tx, La Golf ozik black tie 100x, Kbs proto 95x, dg amt white x100, Tour AD DI 95x and currently steelfiber 110x

 

with the two 90g shafts I found the best distance but accuracy suffered a bit.... the 100+ shafts have all been more accurate for me. TPO is a laser and flies the lowest for me so you probably wanna avoid that. KBS Proto had a nice mid flight as did the Tour AD DI. For a nice neutral flight from both the tee and fairway I dont think the Tour AD can be beat. I had it in both an HMB 3i and 4i. Great Combo!

 

The Steelfiber 110x in my forged tec utility is a monster. Plays stiffer in my mind to the rest of the shaft and combos ive tried

I have the the VTS Black 100g hybrid shaft in my Cobra Utility and gives me a nice mid launch but can work it low for the stinger when needed

OBAN Black hybrid shaft.  I know its states on the website it is for harsh transition players and max load.  But I do not have a harsh transition nor do I swing out my butt.  This shaft is so damn smooth.  Launches mid as well, not the low that is stated.
