Shaft removal without destroying ferrule

I use an electric jug (kettle) to boil water. I rotate the ferule (club head) around the spout when're the steam is coming out. This will generally soften the ferule/epoxy so I can slide the ferule away from the head. Then I use the shaft puller. I need to move the ferule at least an inch or more to use the shaft puller. Use a good cloth that will grip onto the ferule. Sometime the ferules are so stubborn I have to use pliers to move it. This destroys the ferule most times. I need some soft jawed grips for the job.

Read a tip years ago where you boil head and ferrule. Take a small piece of grip and wrap around ferrule. Unwrap that grip piece and it loosens the ferrule. You can then move up the shaft. Put some foil around the ferrule and heat head as normal.

I sort of do the grip wrap but the rest has worked very well.

Sometimes you can put a rubber shaft clamp around the ferrule for a tight grip, and slide it away from the head.

Steel shafts I wrap the ferrule with a wet paper towel.

I'm really surprised at how many responses state that they're able to do this using these methods. This means that the ferrules weren't glued to the shaft or the top of the hosel. I always epoxy the ferrules to ensure they cannot accidentally ride up the shaft leaving a gap. A ferrule installed with epoxy cannot be saved when removing the head.

I’ve used the paste successfully as well.

And speaking of collared ferrules, it's extremely difficult to protect them during the build unless they have a shorty type collar. I've tried and failed to salvage Ping iron ferrules because the collar is long and thin and seems to get heavily distorted almost every time.

I epoxy my ferrules all the time, and can still save them if using steel shafts.

I wrap the ferrule with a wet towel, and if they don’t come off after the head is removed, apply a little more heat to the shaft until they do.
