For those who say the feel of the 770 is the same as the 790, I wonder if it's maybe the shaft or possibly indoor acoustics that contribute to the perceived feel?

It’s not the same - those are guys who can’t differentiate

I’d say it feels better.

felt like it had more pop - like a spring

I haven't hit the 770's, but I have spoken to some guys who have, and a couple of them compared the 770 feel to the PXG Gen 3 0311T. I have hit the PXG Gen 3 0311T and they feel glorious. So, there's that.

I did get the chance to hit all three heads at my club last Friday. Also played Gen 3 0311T for 3 weeks in June. I didn’t get the same feel as the 790 but the 770 did feel lively. But in a good way. MB was very nice but not sure right now a 5 iron out of the hey would be in my ability. To me MC was third but not a bad stick.

FWIW I did order 4-P in 770 and update to the TW grind in 56/60.

There ain’t no way these 770’s can even remotely feel like Gen3’s. Totally different construction. Gen3’s are amazing, but have not hit the 770’s yet. If the 770’s feel

that good... then wow. Played 790’s for a few years and did not like the feel that much.

I will be deciding if they can knock out my beloved PXG 0211’s.

does anyone know if TM automatically soft steps irons still?  I ordered the P770 with DG 120 X100 and wanted to know if it is SSx1 if i picked "standard tipping"

I have a set of 770's on order; I have a set of Gen3's the P model; not a fan; will be selling them. Can't wait for the 770's to arrive.

Have you hit the 770’s? If so, they must  be really good to sell the Gen3’s.

That is a great question and one I spent a lot of time thinking about before I submitted my order, so this response is going to be long. Bottom line is that I've seen mixed results in the past:

  • A past order with C-Taper was correctly built. KBS uses a 37.5" shaft for both 9 and PW.
  • A past order with Modus 120 was correctly built. Nippon has a 37" PW shaft and then a 37.5" 9 iron shaft.
  • A buddy's order with DG X100 was correct in PW (37"), but the rest were soft stepped because TM used the 40.0" thru 37.5" shafts for 4-9. DG is supposed to be 37" for 9/PW and  39.5" thru 37.5" for 4-8.
  • My stock P7TW order (DG S400) was correct in PW (37"), but the rest were soft stepped the same as the order above.
  • A past order for an original P770 4 iron with DG X100 was soft stepped.

Based on that history, my conclusion was that TaylorMade Custom Shop builds start at 37.5" for the 9-iron regardless of the shaft picked. If the shaft uses a 37.5" shaft at 9-iron, then they're straight in. For shafts like DG, with a 37" shaft for 9/PW, then everything but the PW is going to be soft-stepped. EDIT: Thinking about this a bit more, I don't know how they'll handle other shafts that have a 36.5" PW and 37" 9 iron like Project X LZ and Steelfiber, etc. I can really only speak to the 4 shafts I have experience with. So there's clearly no single "use 37.5" for 9-iron" like I said above...at least I hope not. Maybe it's just Dynamic Gold builds that have problems.

I ordered $-Taper with my P770/P7MC/P7MB combo and I feel confident the Custom Shop will get it right because KBS uses 37.5" for both 9 and PW. However, I hedged my bets and ordered them at +0.5" just in case (and also because I rebuild my clubs to MOI match them, so I'm hoping they used lighter hosel weights to keep swing weight correct in a +0.5" build. That way I might not have to remove the hosel weights, which is a pain).

My buddy mentioned above ordered a P770/P7MC combo set with DG X100 hard stepped after he and I spent some time discussing this exact topic. If I'm right and TM effectively soft steps DG in 4-9, they'll come with the shafts installed correctly. If we got it wrong, we can soft-step his 5-8 and get a new 39.5" 4 iron shaft. Waiting to see. Thankfully, we can order grips as "do not attach" so we're not out any grips in order to see how they were installed. And we don't have to deal with the awful grip tape that seems to be used by the Custom Shop.

It's little things like this that frustrate me. The Custom Shop is a very nice tool, but these sort of things seem like process issues. Whomever is doing the breakdown of the builds and components doesn't seem to understand the differences between shafts and just implemented a one size fits all process. Then there is the whole other topic about not being able to request custom swing weights, driver shaft tipping, etc. It's a GREAT resource and is worlds better than the way things were back in the old days, but for people like me who care about getting their clubs built exactly to spec, it's infuriating to have these unknowns.

So what did you like better? I have not hit the 770s yet but I'm addicted to the feel of the Gen3 0311P.   I play the gen 1 0311 currently. The Gen 3 is the best feeling "players distance iron" to me yet and i haven't felt anything close yet.

I would say similar yes. 770 felt a little hotter but numbers were in line. Trajectory was very appealing high penetrating flight

The 770s must be selling like hot cakes. Playing around the TM website the 770s are now out to 10/12 while MC and MB are still 9/4.

Gotta ask... do they charge the CC when you order or when they ship??

Yeah. Fml i waited one day and lost a month. Just ordered 770 4-PW with PX LZ 6.0 a few minutes ago and expected delivery on 10/14.

I kind of made a mistake though. Asked for 1.5 upright but should've just kept standard as I plan on getting fitted somewhere else later. Any chance I can have the order changed after submitting? Anyone do this before?

Did they hit them on a launch monitor? I highly doubt a 29* loft 6i will launch lower than a 26.5, despite the small difference in CG.

They were on the course so just visually observed. And it was a 7 iron but same loft difference. Yeah had a hard time believing it myself. But theyre both wayyyy better than I am so.....*shrug*
