50-54-58-62 Wedge

Can’t we all just get along? Why all the hate because one guy says it works for him? If it doesn’t work for you or you think differently then great. There are 1000 ways to setup your bag. Just let folks discuss without saying one is a unicorn or it’s your way or the highway. Sheesh.....

For sure...to each their own. These 60+ wedges can be amazing if you haven’t tried one. I see both sides to this. I definitely sew how for those longer distances clubs bunching up does no good and if an extra wedge can save you a shot or two it makes sense. It’s not like we’re talking about 20 plus caps carrying this. 12 and less it seems.

Now thats certainly a different point altogether, if you max distance is like 220 with a driver, its easy to see why some would gravitate towards more wedges, as gapping throughout is going to be tighter. I would argue that if your max is 220 you dont need 14 clubs, but that wont sit well. Also, i carry a 60. But i might use it once or twice a round, where as my 55 gets used 5 times as much. I didnt always do that, i really struggled from the scoring positions. EVERYTHING inside 100 used to be a lob wedge, exception of chips. And im sure this is common. Switching to lower lofts inside 100 really transformed my game. And my point about the lob wedge isnt just for 12 cappers, its for very good players too, scratch golfers. Just go watch that video, he teaches alot of pros and aspiring pros.

Yes, this is a chip shot, I would probably play this with a 54, hard to tell the slope of the green and I have no idea how soft the greens are. The rule of thumb for me is to get the ball on the green as quickly as possible for any chip shot, I still have a golf digest article from Tom Kite and I use his ideas for all of my chipping and some of my pitching. This teacher is 100% correct for chip shots. I use 9 irons and hybrids a lot for around the greens too. The 62* only comes out for a chip if I short sided myself with thick rough or some reason like that. My chipping game is not getting practice yet either and anything other than a stock chip shot is not getting used.

This is not what I was talking about in my above posts. I am talking about my ability to hit closer shots in the 40-120 yard area.

I'm a 46-50-54-60

I debated a lot over whether to go 54 or 56 as I always carried a 56 in the past. But taking the Vokey online quiz they recommended 54. And honestly, I hit it for more full shots when gap wedge is just too much club, so having a 4 degree gap between those made more sense than a 4 degree gap with the lob. Or you can always split the difference and go 55 if 1 degree of bounce isn't a big deal.

Most courses that I have played at or play at tend to have a couple of average par 5s. I tend to leave the driver out of the bag. A 3 wood of the tee and deck gets me on the green or close to it. generally 50% of the times i can get up and down from there.... its the finesse that is missing... so figured have a discussion about what you are all doing. There is no right or wrong. but trying to find a way to enjoy the game... as for what is in the bag for me

driver 983k 7.5

3 wood ranges from 13 or 15

5 wood 19 or 21

3-PW titleist 990 dci

sw/lw ping eye 2 gorge

definitely missing a gap wedge

half the time my long irons dont come into play at all... unless facing severe head winds

so playing around with shorter irons seems to be the way to play around. most courses average 6400 yards so fairly short courses.

Currently using 48,54,60,64

My 64 degree wedge is magic, especially on fast greens. Been using one since ‘08. There are shots I can hit with my Callaway MD4 64 no other club can pull off. Started with a Callaway X Forged 64 in ‘08 had to switch because of the groove rule. (I could back that thing up downhill, shortsighted on fast greens.)

46° - 52° - 58° - 64°

4 Wedges, 6° between each.

154y - 135y - 116y - 97y

9 Iron at 42° is the first 4° increment; and that is 167y.

8i - 38° - 180y

7i - 34° - 193y

6i - 30° - 205y

5i - 26° - 218y

'Modern Traditional' is how I look at it. 5 Irons and 4 Wedges. 9 Clubs of my 14-Clubs-Gamer-Bag.
