Your Favorite Major Venues

I was thinking, if I could pick where the majors are held in a given year, where would I choose?

Obviously Augusta is a constant.

For the US Open, I would probably go with Oakmont. But the old Oakmont with all the trees. Alternates would be Olympic (same older version with all the trees), Oakland Hills

The Open--I know most people would go St. Andrews, but I always likes Turnberry, with Royal St. Georges as alternate.

PGA--this was the hardest. Bellerive really impressed me recently. Atlanta AC has had a couple strong tournaments but-- Whistling Straits has had 3 fairly epic PGAs.

The Open - St Andrews all day long (although it is a terrible course for spectating) & Carnoustie (the exact opposite in terms of spectating)

US Open - Oakmont, Winged Foot - proper US Open courses where they aren’t scared to set it up like a US Open.

PGA - Umm...I’ll come back to you.

US Open - Shinnecock and Pebble. Bethpage works too, the people's course.

Open Championship - I thought that Royal Portrush was wonderful. Always like the Old Course. Turnberry is overrated.

PGA - nothing wrong with Baltusrol, Whistling Straits or even Bethpage.

Bethpage for the fact that any one of us can go play the course. Even in normal conditions that course was the toughest I've ever played. Hope they bring a US open back.

US Open - has to be Pebble for me, stunning course in a fabulous part of the world.

 

The Open - St Andrews for me for all the obvious reasons, plus I went to Uni there so have a few memories. As an aside I'd love to see The Open in either The New or The Jubilee in St Andrews, both fabulous courses in their own rights. Other shouts would be Carnoustie or Royal Lytham (love me a Par 3 to start with).

 

PGA - Wentworth? Oh sorry you mean that PGA ? I'll go for Bethpage, with Winged Foot close behind.

Pebble Beach for the US Open followed by Oakmont and Shinnecock Hills

St. Andrew's for the British Open followed by Carnoustie and Turnberry

Pebble Beach and Oakmont also lead the way for the PGA with Winged Foot and Riviera just behind them. (none have hosted since 1977, 1978, 1997 and 1995 respectively)

 

Ultimate Grand Slam would be Augusta, Pebble Beach, St. Andrew's and Pine Valley for a PGA that's converted back to match play

Alternate locations: Riviera, Pebble, Old Course.

No real alternative for Augusta, so for fun I'll just say if it came to it -- Royal Melbourne.

My list will be a little different:

Masters: Obviously Augusta (best major venue)

PGA: Valhalla (always seems to produce an exciting tournament even though the course is kind of bland)

US Open: Oakmont (fairest US Open course, nothing gimmicky about it)

Open Championship: Gotta go with Muirfield (I think this course is the best course in the Open Championship rota, always seems to produce a great tournament and the list of winners is awesome. As a course I think it's better then St Andrews.)

Augusta, Pinehurst, Pebble, Carnoustie, Bethpage, Old Course. I HATE the fact that the US Open is played on so many old stuffy private country clubs and prefer resort or public courses for the US major that is "Open" for any to try and get into.

I think Kiawah is best for Match play events personally, but love the course.

US Open - Shinnecock and Pebble. The Olympic Club is still viable for any major.

Open Championship - I thought that Royal Portrush was awesome! What a great course, murder with weather. Carnoustie and The Old Course

PGA - Southern Hills, in the August Oklahoma heat. May could be pretty windy. Whistling Straits and Bellerive are good venues.

Moving the PGA to May could have an effect on upper mid west and upper east coast course viability, as has been discussed on this board. May dates will completely change how we've traditionally known the event.

Shinnecock and Carnoustie for me. I also like Winged Foot a lot. Baltusrol and Merion are also worthy venues. Oakmont and Oakland Hills don't do much for me. St. Andrews just doesn't measure up anymore with the players hitting the ball as far as they do now. but I'd love to play it myself.

Pretty tough to pick just one venue, lots of great options! Strictly going off what I believe to be the best courses for major championship golf I'd go with the following.....

 

The Masters: Augusta National

PGA Champ: Oak Hill

US Open: Olympic Club

The Open: Muirfield

Masters. Move it to Peachtree for a change!!

US Open. Shinnecock as long as the USGA don't ruin the set up.

Open Championship. Royal Birkdale. Awesome course and great for access and spectating.

PGA. Sahalee as it is a much tighter test or Baltusrol for the history.
