These clubs were given to me by my grandfather some years ago, he was given them by Bobby Locke who he played golf with

Made in Leven, Fife. Sadly now gone, but we all played Nicoll clubs around here as did Henry Cotton, Brian Huggett amongst other pros. Willie Kirk did the pro's woods at Leven in the factory and I think that Jimmy forged the irons Sandy Stephen was the youngest winner of the Scottish Amateur played a set of Nicoll Cotton Extra's. Great clubs back in the day. I played Royales for may seasons.

Very similar to 56 Spalding top Flites. I saw a few loose irons at a goodwill in Indianapolis. Started to buy them but they were just to random,.not nearly as nice as the ones shown above.

I just took delivery this morning of a set of Forgan Power-Pakt, American Model irons and the similarity between those and your Autographs again points to the amount of shared design/manufacture that went on at that time.

I initially thought that these were cast heads from the same mould, probably produced at Precision Products in Cumbria using the Shaw process, with tweaks to the mould giving slight variations of script and lines but closer inspection, particularly of the toe profile, shows a distinct difference so maybe, maybe not.

Below are pictures comparing the 10 irons (the only Nicoll Autograph club I have). Basic shape is almost identical but the Forgan hosel is slightly longer.

The Nicoll has a True Temper Rocket green band and the Forgan a True Temper Pro-Fit band which, I think, would make the Nicoll slightly earlier.

I thought ping was the first to cast heads and every thing up till then were forged.

Cast heads in the UK were pretty common by the time Ping started, they might have been the first in America to use cast heads.

I have played them a few times, blades are a lot more unforgiving than cavities though. The stems are a little on the short side for me but I do like the feel of them.

Anyone interested in buying a set of these? I've inherited some and I just came across this chat  when I was trying to get a sense of what they're worth. Also have some Walter hagen woods and a John Letters brass putter. Also could any of these be used for golf nowadays?

They can all be used today but the market is limited to the connoisseurs you will find on this forum - people who appreciate the finer aspects and subtleties of the game and who are not fooled by the marketing guys into chasing distance and performance with their wallets! 😁
