Haig - Ultra Irons

Hi all, long time golfer and lurker. My friend’s dad had a lovely set of Haig Ultras that always appealed to me even though at the time, in my mind they were “ancient junk” (I was a kid) and lusted after some BeCu Pings at the time.

Anyway, I’m long past my days of decent golf and I’ve become interested in a set of older forged irons and came across these:They look to be in great shape and are certainly pretty clubs. I know some of these came with aluminum shafts that I’d love to avoid and I don’t believe these are aluminum based on the finish and maybe the appearance of some very light rust. In any case, can anyone tell me about these? I’m trying to arrange a pickup but it’s a decent drive.

Thank you!

I've a set of irons with aluminium shafts, and the diameter at the hosel is noticeably thicker. Aluminium shafts were apparently thicker than steel shafts. It's hard to tell off your picture, but they look to be regular thickness, so I would guess they're steel shafts. Rust, even light rust, also strongly suggests steel. Can you not ask the seller to try putting a magnet to the shafts to checK? That would be the easiest way to find out.

Also, I spotted a black band on the step closest to the head, which means they're regular flex. I've got some Wilson's with regular flex, and they play great. Some of my favourite irons, in fact.

Good info on the band. I’d typically play stiff but I can adjust. Good call in the diameter, as well as the magnet. Not sure why I hadn’t considered that, previously.

thanks!

I have a "set" of Haig Ultras at the moment. 3, 5 , 7 , 9 from 1971 and 1 iron and sand wedge from 66 all with regular shafts. Guy was going to throw them out and so I took them. Not much chance of me using them as they are right handed but Haigs seem to age well, most of the sets I have seen still look in very good condition.

Thank you, Richard. I suppose I should clarify that I know if there is any rust, they’d be steel. In the pic, I couldn’t quite tell if there is rust or not.

1970 model year is great to know.

much appreciated!

They are light weight steel made for Wilson/Haig called Ultralite A good shaft from that era as many manufacturers moved away from the original Dynamic and Pro Fit shafts which were very heavy and played much stiffer than their rated flex.

Those look to be in excellent shape. I'd grab them. The shafts look chrome so that means steel.

Unlike some other clubs of the same era those look to have relatively short hosels. That means the CG will be closer to the center of the face and the CG will be lower for good playability.

Good luck.

Just grabbed these irons and they are in better shape than the pictures indicated. They couldn’t have been played much. I suspect with a good polish on the wheel, they’ll look close to brand new.

Also, the grips are original and show very little wear but are cracking from age. Are there any sources for reproduction grips? A google search didn’t seem to land any results outside of leather grips for old hickory clubs but I figured I’d ask anyway. :)

Are the grips leather or rubber? If they are leather they can probably be saved. Give them a cleaning with saddle soap, let them sit overnight, then condition them with neatsfoot oil. Rub the neatsfoot oil on with a rag and let dry. It might take multiple applications of neatsfoot oil but I’ve saved some leather grips that looked to be in pretty bad shape.

Those Haig Ultras of that era are fantastic clubs. In 2002 I bought a set just like Richard posted above after I got fed up with my wide sole Hogan Apex Plus cavity backs I had bought a few months earlier. I played some great golf with them but when I moved to LA to finish school I left them in my girlfriends (now wife) garage and her brother threw them out when cleaning the garage thinking they were just some old clubs. Lost a great set of persimmons too. ?

That is a great set you have. I might need to find a set again myself.

They are haig ultra branded rubber grips.

I’ll have some photos, shortly.

i wish they were leather, I restore old shoes as a hobby and could easily handle a leather refurb. :)

If they are half as nice as the Crenshaw grinds I picked up a little while ago, they will play.

I have two sets of Founders 200 series irons. Just after I picked up my second set I found a set of Founders logo grips on Yahoo auction. They are Golf Pride Tour Velvet with the Founders Logo. Put some on my Haigs because why not.
