Long Iron Shaft Change

Recommended Posts

I am looking to change the shaft in my 4 iron. I play ns pro modus 120 stiff shafts in my z585 5-pw. I am considering switching to graphite for my 4 iron. I have noticed a lot of pros are using graphite in their longest iron and/or utility iron. Any suggestions on where to begin my search for a graphite shaft? I see Louis O plays the  Project X HZRDUS Red Hybrid 85 in his 3 iron. Thoughts on Aldila nv, vs, or nvs proto by you 75-85? UST? Grafalloy pro launch? I guess my question is what is the best utility .355 tip affordable shaft? Brand and/or model? @75-95 gram shaft. My ss for driver is @105 mph. Hdcp=8 Thanks!!

I play a Handcrafted HZRDUS Black 85 .370" hybrid shaft in a 718 AP2 3 iron head and it is one of my favorite clubs in the bag. It's stupid long for a 3 iron, I can hit it a reliable 230-245 off the tee all day of varying trajectories and can work it both ways. You can pick them up on the bay for a good deal as well, bought an uncut backup for less than $70 that will eventually find it's way into a T100 3 iron or maybe try a T-MB/U500 option again. I would love to try a heavier 95 or 105 but they are hard to find.

I put a Tour AD-DI in my 712U a couple of months ago. The thing is a beast! Off the tee is just seems to go forever but the biggest difference that I have found is that it makes shots from the fairways that bit more manageable. I struggled with height sometimes off the deck with a KBS steel shaft in there but that is no longer an issue with the graphite shaft in there.

No, my irons are .355 but any .370 tip will work. You have to pencil trim the tip to create the taper and fit into a .355. I think there was a GolfWRX cover article or YouTube video with Ryan Barath showing the process a few months ago.

Thanks! I am just beginning to reshaft my own clubs. Reshafted 3 so far that have bonded well :) Just put an Aldilia VS proto 85 x stiff in my 4 iron. Hit it a few times yesterday but I am afraid it might be too stiff. Only $15 so I thought I would give it a try... Just anticipating needing to try something different. Any thoughts on trying a Regular flex even though my driver is x and irons 5-pw are ns pro modus 120 stiff and work well? Thanks again!!

Please consider our PRO iron shaft for this instance, and all of your irons for that matter :) We've had great success with Tour pros specifically utilizing our PRO in their long irons/driving irons.

I've tried this experiment twice and it didn't work out both times. I tried it with my 745s I had in the 3I and also with my current RBZ Tours. Maybe it was shaft choice (Recoil 95 and Fuji Pro 95) but the balance, feel and consistency dropped off tremendously when I switched to graphite. In the 745s it was going from DGS300 and in the RBZ DGAMT. When flushed, I noticed more height and a little more distance. The problem was I had way more mishits. Maybe the profile or the weight didn't match but on 10 swings I would have 3-4 good ones with graphite and the rest decent but not flushed.

Once I switched back to steel, out of 10 swings I'm getting 8-9 easily and with the AMT shaft being 106g I don't see a need for graphite.

Thanks! I put the amt white in my 5 iron, I may just put amt in my 4 iron as well. To go from 114 grams (modus tour 120 S) to 80-90 grams might be too much as you state to maintain consistent ball striking... The Aldilia VS proto 85 x stiff in my 4 iron may not last long. I have a dg amt 3 iron shaft “on deck” that will probably go into my 4 iron next if this graphite attempt fails.. Thanks!

I have Modus 120s as well in 5-pw, and have a Modus 105s in my 4 iron. Feels pretty good for now, although I still launch it a bit low.

I’ve played Srixon in the past and like the modus 120 shaft which is 114 grams static weight so 85 grams or 95 grams range will be the sweet spot.

I recommend the recoil 95 or even 110 if you can still get them because with a 4 iron you want more ball speed with less effort but comparable trajectory to your iron set and the transition won’t be a big jump in sensation.
