Shelta hat fans, which model for golf?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to get used to a full brim sun hat for the last year. I have only tried a couple of cheapish models & can't get used to the flapping brim in the wind, especially in the front. Thinking about investing in a better quality version & like what I've read here about Shelta. Which version do you prefer? Seems like a lot of people here like the Seahawk & Raptor, but I'm thinking the Condor wide-angled version might be my pick. Thanks...

I have a Raptor and Firebird. I used the Raptor last week fishing and it was outstanding staying on even when zipping along at 35+ mph across the water. It is a little too geeky looking for golf though. Something about the narrower sides. The Firebird is a wider hat with better overall sun coverage and it looks nicer as well. I will be trying it today and this weekend. It is going to be my range rat hat at the very least. Condor or Firebird would be best for sun coverage. It just depends on whether you like a rounded crown or more traditional squared off crown.

It fits nicely and feels more like a cap. However, the squared off crowns are a little more classic (ala Tilley et al.) and probably look a little nicer. The squared off crown style looks a little more manly to my eye, with the rounded crown a bit more unisex hence my choice.

I have the Seahawk, highly recommended. Condor could be good for more sun protection, haven’t tried it. Condor brim is wider and angled downward. Seahawk has the metal eyelet vents, Condor does not.

Glad I stumbled on this thread. I have a Ping wide brim hat that I think looks ridiculous on me. I only use it at the range. I'm thinking the Seahawk or Condor would work and they look "ok" - not ball cap good but the sun is enough of an issue here in So Utah it would be worth it. I wonder if the Condor may be so wide that it gets in the way.

I have the sea hawk and I dig it. The brim is not as wide as you imagine. I do not think I would like the more narrow models. I probably would have ordered wider, but I like the bonnet (eyelet vents) style better than the sport running style.

Does not even come close to getting in the way. Absorbs / wicks sweat very well. I am a fan..

I have a Seahawk and could not ask for a better hat. I forgot to put sunscreen on my neck my last round and I did not get burned. The Seahawk, in my opinion, offers all the protection you need without the added size or weight of the larger models.

I just ordered the Seahhawk. Like I mentioned, I'm not a fan of boonie style hats so I'm hoping I don't look too much of a dork in this one. This is an exceptionally hot summer this year and I plan on using it for fishing too.

based on recommendations here I ordered a Seahawk and played my first round with it yesterday. it's a great hat. pretty comfortable for a brand new hat, though I'm hoping the front of the hat will soften up a bit. the stiff insert in the brim is a great feature, but it was a bit uncomfortable pushing into my forehead. hats need to break in, though, so I'm hopeful the comfort will improve.

I own a floppy Outdoor Research sun hat that I stopped wearing because I felt silly in it. The Shelta is a better looking hat, imo, so I'm much more likely to keep wearing it on sunny days. I feel like I've gotten too much sun so far this year, so anything that helps me be smarter about it is appreciated.

I have two Seahawks and they have not changed in size or had any break-in. Assuming you don't have the drawstring tightened, your only option may be to buy the next size up.

Seahawk owner here, best decision for me. I agree with @Philomathesq , they aren’t supposed to wear in, the brim is an integral part of the wind feature. My hat fits perfect and was based upon measurement recommendations from Shelta website. I Assume you did the same. Keep in mind not all head geometries are the same, and you might have a pressure point that is uncomfortable. Shelta does mention that the brim is accepting of slight manipulation, maybe that might help?

yeah, I'm trying to work the brim a bit at a time into a better shape for me. with the draw-cord completely loose the hat fits just a little loose on my head, which I think is right. I tighten it a little to just be snug, so I think I've got the right size. just need a little more rounding in the brim to make it fit better. in any case, it's a great hat and I'll be sticking with it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been wearing my Seahawk for a couple of weeks now. As far as goofy looking wide brim hats go its top shelf. Thinking about getting a Firebird or Condor for when I go fishing.

I bought one of these through a retailer that had put their logo on it.  Very happy so far.  Not a Shelta but if you are maybe looking for a thriftier version it is an option.

Mine is light khaki (putty they call it on the link).  I've worn it for a round or two and I was surprised that it never gets in the way or have I ever hit the brim.  There really was no adjustment to wearing it.  My only complaint is if it rains the brim will get floppy.

Yeah the brim does not "break in."  If it digs into your forehead now, it always will.   Same thing happened to me and i contacted the owner and he confirmed i needed a larger size.  Since it was too late to return it, he did give me a 50% off discount code for a new one.  Pretty cool company.

most bucket hats I’ve seen are made of cotton material, which can be hot and heavy. The Shelta hats are made with a lighter dri-fit material. I have the Raptor and the crown is similar to a running hat.
