Issue w front foot sliding out?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone see an issue w my lead foot sliding out to the left after contact (right handed)? This seems to be caused by my follow through and opening up my hips during/after contact? Does anyone see anything wrong with this? I'm hitting the ball well however one symptom of this seems to be that I'm hitting the ball higher. I know alot of folks will say that I must be putting more of my weight on the back foot but if that's the case, I'm not chunking the ball and hitting it well, again, with the exception of the ball flight being a little higher. Unsure how this started as I have always hit the ball "normal" and am healthy. I have been trying to create a draw when my swing has always hit a fade, which seems to be working. Thanks.

Picker? Lot of draws look more like tennis/ping pong draws or snap hooks? My dad is the more extreme case as he ends up with both feet facing the target after some of his swings. At least with driver. Trying to hit up and weight goes to the back foot

I’m not enough of an expert to be credible on this subject, though I suspect it either has the potential to create inconsistent low points and it possibly causes you to lose connection with the ground (and therefore might sap power or at the very least might prevent a good full turn).

Anyway, the only reason I’m responding is that I did exactly what you described naturally for years. I had two instructors tell me I had to fix it, but neither could really explain why. I eventually decided I would fix it, so I did. It wasn’t that hard to fix if I remember correctly. It involved some better weight shifting (transfer weight to lead heel on the downswing) and some drill I can’t quite remember but I think it was putting a brick (or water bottle would work even better) out in front of the foot a little bit as a reminder to shift weight properly and not spin the foot out.

Others can weigh in in whether it is inherently a bad thing or not. I assume it probably is because of points above, but smarter swing gurus can answer better than I.

Good luck!

Thanks. My sliding makes it feel like I am turning through more, but I could be wrong. Unsure what is causing it as I have never done this before. Def prob an issue of transferring weight to the front. When I have seen my swing, it doesn't look like I lean back or leave alot of my weight on my back foot, but it prob is the case to a certain extent.

If this is a problem depends on any of a few factors. First thing to understand is, what part of your foot is sliding? Heel, toe, or entire foot? If your toe is turning toward the target then it’s entirely possible that you simply have some restricted internal hip rotation so your foot spins out when you finish the swing. That’s ok and is easily remedied by addressing the ball with your foot flared. If your heel is actually moving backward (away from the target) then that has to be stopped. At least with your iron swing. This will cause massive issues with low point control. If your entire foot is moving then, obviously, you’ve not shifted either your weight or your pressure correctly.

The fault I had way back when was that I would, in a flash, move my entire lead foot just off the ground and turn it with toes pointed to target. I did replant it at that point, and turned a little bit on it. But I suspected it probably sapped my power because I lost connection with the ground briefly, and during my transition. It probably also sent me over the top more than I was doing otherwise. It had to have been a problem with my weight transfer in transition, and luckily it wasn’t that hard for me to fix.

This s occasionally an issue for me related to my swing sequence issues. When that left foot starts sliding, it means my lower body stopped and I lurched at the ball with my upper body. It’s my reminder to get weight on the left side.

often the shots come off okay. But, when I see it happening, I know I better fix something quick.
