GIVEAWAY: TaylorMade PGA Championship Staff Bag and Headcovers! Super Limited!

Recommended Posts

this is an easy one for me. it was the '05 open championship.

at the time i was a starving exchange student in north england. i mean, they fed us (quite well, actually) but i literally couldn't afford entry into the championship at the time.

that saturday i noticed tiger was atop the leaderboard. this was my guy! and i was only a few hours away by train. i knew i had to get up there, but the only problem -- i mean, besides the money thing? -- was students weren't permitted to take off on adventures of their own. so i'd have to be sneaky about it or risk getting in trouble.

i tried to rally some accomplices but none were keen to chance it. however, they all agreed to help cover for me if my whereabouts came into question the next day. i would hardly be the first student who needed a recovery day on sunday. and as long as i made an appearance at the university pub that evening i'd be all in the clear.

i knew gaining entry at st. andrews would be a real crapshoot without a ticket, but i figured even if i couldn't get in i'd be able to find a pub somewhere close to the old course. worst case scenario? i'd spend my last few quid on a pint (or two) and some chips whilst watching golf on TV -- just like any other sunday. and being in the same general vicinity as tiger when he hoisted his second claret jug would be icing on the cake.

fortunately, security was sparse when i arrived at the old course and i snuck right in like a rascal. i quickly found the last two groups and followed tiger and monty around for the whole afternoon. it was amazing. i called friends and family back home at every opportunity to find out if they could see me on TV. nope. but it was nice to share the experience and it's something we still talk about to this day.

perhaps the best part was being there on 18 when tiger won it. after having such low expectations leading up to that moment i was absolutely thrilled -- unlike practically everyone else around me, which was weird but understandable. it was an amazing way to finish the day and more than i could've asked for. i could hardly wait to get back to the university and rub it in my friends' faces to share everything with my buddies who covered for me earlier.

but the adventure didn't stop there. the train was delayed for hours and hours because of a fire on or near the tracks somewhere down the line. and surprise, surprise -- my phone died so i couldn't call for back-up at the university pub that night. since this wasn't the first time i pulled shenanigans, i knew i was in trouble. fortunately, i was seated next to an employee of the rail company and his daughter who happily traded conversation for free food and beverages on the ride back. they were wonderful. and many hours later when the train pulled into my station i was satiated and jolly. the long walk back on the deserted cobblestone roads was peaceful and stress-free. and when my head finally hit the pillow that night i slept quite well despite knowing what waited for me the next day.

after breakfast the next morning i was promptly pulled into the director's office. he had some very choice words for me and i was nearly sent back to the states for that stunt. fortunately, the director was a golf (and tiger) fan and let me off with a stern warning and put me on academic probation for the rest of the term. totally worth it, though, and something i'll remember for the rest of my life.

The 2008 US Open playoff tiebreaker with Rocco scrapping with Tiger, who was on one leg. I think that's the funnest and most intense day of golf I've ever watched.

2008 US Open, no question. Seeing the putt drop on the 72nd hole to force a playoff was probably the most excited I've ever been watching anything on TV. What an amazing tournament.

Final round, 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

Walking with my wife on 17 and Cabrera was making his way to the green. My wife asked me if he was "El Pato"? Cabrera turned around and said to her, "yes, I am".

That's the only tournament we ever been to, but for my wife was priceless.

Of course, Cabrera won that tournament. Very special to us.

L.A.B. Golf is choosing ten GolfWRX members to receive their MEZZ.1 putter early and put their brand new product to the test before reporting back to the community about what they see. The selected testers will be one of the first to experience the MEZZ.1 from L.A.B. GOLF, their newest Lie Angle Balanced design, ahead of it's January 2022 launch!

About The L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1 Putter
MEZZ.1 is our new mid-mallet putter that’s fully CNC machined from a billet of 6061 aircraft aluminum (body) and 303 stainless steel (midsection) to create our best-feeling — and we think best looking — putter to date. It includes 10 weights (eight on the bottom, two on the sides) that allow us to individually build each putter to a golfer’s exact specifications.

      How To Apply
In a post below, answer the following questions.

      1. City, State?
      2. Handicap?
      3. What is your current putter?
      4. Have you ever used a L.A.B. Golf putter?
      5. Why do you want to review the MEAZZ.1 putter?
      6. Do you agree to participate in an ongoing testing thread, posting reviews and photos?

That's it! @labgolf and GolfWRX will choose the testers in about 2 weeks! This testing event is for good-standing members in the USA only!
