Best ball strikers by era

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about this for a while and I wanted to throw this out there. Who do you guys think are the best ball strikers by era? I will start and I dont think that this is a comprehensive list.

Pre 1950 - Bobby Jones. I watch some of his old videos are marvel at what he could do.

1950s and 60s - Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Moe Norman (maybe the best ever honestly)

1970s and 1980s - Johnny Miller, Hal Sutton, Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, Mac O'Grady

1990s and 2000s - Tiger Woods, Nick Price

2010s until now - Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, and I think a guy like Colin Morikawa may sneak on here

Morikawa has been on tour for a year and hits a big sweeping cut miss right off the tee with a driver haha. Love the optimism for him tho :D

I’d have no idea who the best ball striker is in any era since I average attending about one day of PGA Tour tournament golf a year. I’d be parroting what the talking heads say, and they say a lot of things. In reality, it’s probably somebody ranked between 100 and 200 in the world who can’t putt a lick but because of ball striking has kept a card.

1940's - Byron Nelson.

1960's and 1970's - Jack Nicklaus. Yes, he was a great putter, but practically no one could hit long, high long irons like Jack.

Moe Norman was straight, but short, and really didn't win anything at the highest levels. Best to leave him out of the conversation.

Late 1980s/1990s Faldo was untouchable...Seve, Olazabal, Sandy Lyle also phenomenal ball strikers in that time.

leaving Tom Watson off of any ball striker list is a crime in itself, what's even more remarkable is that he has kept that same ability throughout his career..

Even though I didnt see him till he was a Senior, Gene Littler always hit the ball on the center of his club face, saw his irons once in a shop owned by a friend and the wear spot was dead smack in the center of each club

When Tiger Woods claimed he was one of two guys who owned his swing (Hogan was the other), then I think he needs to be on the list. There are a LOT of people who think that. The reason he didnt win was he had some serious quirks (maybe autistic or aspergers?). He just never missed the center of the face.

Agree on the others.

Faldo, yes. He was almost robotic. Seve - no. He was an absolute master escape artist, but he was wild. Sandy Lyle lost his swing many times over his career.

Seve was great, but his escapes were legendary.

I disagree. He was long and straight and maybe the best long iron player ever. He wasnt just a clutch putter. You can't win that much not being a good ball striker.

I left him off my list just because he was so good at everything, but there were better ball strikers in his era. He thought his way around the course better than anyone. He was a tremendous putter in the clutch. He drove it well and was awesome with that 1 iron.

that guy was boo weekley.

id probably throw out Westwood as a one of the better ball strikers in the Tiger era. Seems like everyone that ever played with Freddie talks about how he always hits in on the screws.

that said, for pretty much anyone that actually knew him it always seems like the list starts and ends with Hogan. before my time, but seems like a strong consensus. I remember hearing someone ask Jack about Tiger vs Hogan as far as ball-striking and it seemed it really wasnt even a question in Jack's mind.

Boo and Westwood are two good ones..

Yeah, I have heard that too. Hogan was just in another class. Would have loved to actually watch him. I started really watching golf in the early 80s when I started playing.

Lee Westwood is one of the best I've seen in the past 20 years. Top 100 player level for chipping and putting but tee to green the level of a great. Consistently competed in spite of his short game thanks to crisp iron shots and great driving. From 2008 to 2016, 9 top 3 finishes in majors and if he putted or chipped anywhere like Luke Donald did in those years he would have won 5 or 6 majors.

For me, the guy over the last 10 years that is at another level is Stenson. I mean, the ball just sounds different coming off of his clubs. Not sure why and it is hard to explain, but man...

Story I’ve heard about Trevino...

In the times before players took caddies around the world with them and they were paired with local caddies, Trevino wasn’t getting on with his allocated caddie during a practice round at Muirfield in 1968. After 9 holes he asked for a replacement. Very quickly a canny Scot, Willie Aitchison who had caddied De Vincenzo to victory in 1967, was found and carried for the back nine. On a par 4, Trevino asked for a yardage for his second shot. Aitchison, in his slow Scottish drawl replied: ‘Five iron.’ Trevino asked again and back came the same answer. Trevino asked for 5 balls. He placed them on the ground and promptly hit driver, 1-iron, 7-iron, putter and finally 5-iron onto the green. ‘When I ask for a yardage, I want a yardage,’ growled Trevino. Despite this auspicious start, Aitchison caddied for Trevino at every Open he competed in including his 2 victories.
