Mizuno JPX 921 Tour, Forged, JPX-921 Hot Metal & JPX921 Hot Metal Pro irons: In-hand photos

Recommended Posts

I blind ordered my 921 Forged last week, looking like they'll ship week of 10/3. I had my 5 and 6 bent 1* weak to match my current set (Srixon Z585/785 combo set) gapping. I've always loved Mizuno irons, but have been trying other options the last few years. I'm excited to see how the 921 Forged work for me!

I've mentioned it before, but hard to believe these heads still arent at Canadian retailers. I was ready to drop on order on day one, but the way its going our season will be over before i can get these in hand. Im probably going to just wait until next year and cross shop with whatever drops from Ping and others. No point staring at them in my closet for four months.

Yeah it sucks that none of the local shops have received the fitting heads yet..... Been emailing my pro shop for the past few weeks and still no updates =/

TXG just did a video on how sole width affects your swing.  Basically the conclusion was that sometimes a sole that's too wide can make a person hit the ball worse, leading to loss of ball speed and poor dispersion.  They compared the 921 Tours to the 921 HMs, so it was the extremes in the Mizuno 921 line, but what was discussed in the video seems like it could apply to forged vs HM or forged vs HMP -- thus making your findings not that odd.

That said, since you are supposed to contact the ball before the ground anyways, the ball should be long gone before the club "interacts" with the turf.  So in theory turf interaction should have zero effect on the final result.  But we aren't robots, so I'm wondering if the CG placement is really the reason for the differences.  We probably feel clubs differently based on their CG placement, so that could potentially impact our ability to strike the ball well with some irons.  I know that when I play with the weights on my driver, it feels completely different and I feel like my swing changes a bit as a result.

This is a pretty good video, with the main message being that one of the most important things with an iron fitting (if not the most important) is turf interaction.  Yet, I would guess that 90% of iron fittings are done indoors off mats.  Including TXG fittings.  Wouldn't this mean that most fittings are not as helpful as they could/should be?

I’ve been wondering the same. I was fitted recently for 919 Hot Metal Pros, indoors using matts, but later in the day I took them to the range and it was like hitting an entirely different set of irons.

How was your experience with the HMP on the grass range?  I assume it was worse than the mats?

Myself I hate mats, and really only like them for monitoring my SS, distance and shaft options. If I’m hitting decent off a mat, even miss hits, I’m comfortable I’ll be fine on grass, the issue on mats and tight lies is if you have a flatter swing your experience may not be good, but if you have an upright swing you always look great on mats, but a flat swinger I hate tight lies and would rather be in that first cut of rough/fluff.

Just wondering if anybody has tested the Forged and Tour and can compare them?

I had a chance to hit about 300 range balls with a borrowed set of JPX 900 Forged and absolutely loved them enough that I’d like to buy the current model. Unfortunately I’m a lefty, and they’re not offering 921 Forged for lefties — only the “SEL” set with Forged 4/5 irons and Tour from 6 on. I’m a high handicapper — dropping rapidly as I get lessons and practice, but still, I’m concerned the Tour wouldn’t be forgiving enough for me. The Forged were perfect; I might just end up reshafting a used set or something if I have to. But I haven’t been able to try to 921 SEL with the Tour shorter irons yet.

I hit the JPX 921 Tour and Forged indoors on GCQuad. To me Tour felt similar to MP-20 MMC in forgiveness. Forged were a fair bit more forgiving than Tour. Both felt very good, but they are quite different clubs.

Got it, good to know, thanks. And that’s a bummer. The MMC is another club I’ll never be able to test because Mizuno doesn’t offer it for lefties. The company offering no real middle ground between Hot Metal and Tour/MP-20 for lefties is frustrating.

Yeah, that is frustrating. JPX 921 is nice lineup with many options, and it is a bummer lefties only get one choice.

Who has HMBs and compared the 921 to them? I love the look of HMBs but want height and better turf interaction. Thinking about a 921 Forged set bent 2* weak down to 9 then 1* weak in PW.

I have HMB's (5-PW), lofted 1° strong, which are the same specs as the 921F. Compared 7-irons on both the launch monitor and a handful of shots out on the course. Saw no real difference in spin, distance, launch angle, or dispersion. The 921F may have peaked a hair higher,  but they gave me absolutely no reason to kick my HMB's out.

Thanks. Good information. I would be going the opposite way on loft to get more bounce and better turf interaction with either set. You and I seem to be around the same HC and the Mizuno quick fit guide always points me to MMC then give me the option of HMBs for more forgiveness. The MMCs are just not the direction I want to go because I know how I get on bad swing days. I want the help. The HMB gave me significantly better turf interaction over the 919 Forged when I tried the in stock configurations. I have gotten to the point where this is the most important thing to my iron game. I can take a standard lofted 34* 7 iron and hit it farther than a strong lofted 31* if it gets through the turf better.

Yes, exact same boat. I went with the HMB's since I wanted more forgiveness. Even lofted strong, I've had no issues with the HMB's going through the grass. With the 5-iron essentially at 0° of bounce, it hasn't been problematic. If at some point I do want something a bit thinner, I'd check out the MMC's again for sure. With the right shaft, either one will be great though.

Has anyone else done a side by side comparison of the forged and HMP?  Curious to hear your thoughts on how they compare.

I also hit the HMP. Just as you'd expect from all the reviews - a bit more distance (but not huge), with less spin. They felt nice though and are definitely going to be forgiving.

Thanks.  I'm leaning towards the HMP because it should be more forgiving and felt about the same to me as the forged.  I just worry about the sole width, which was larger than I expected.

Does Mizuno notify via email when they ship and send a tracking number?

I think this is up to whoever you order them through. I have never gotten anything directly from Mizuno.

Those look fantastic in the bag. I am waiting to see them in person. I stopped by the shop over the weekend and they had the HMP and HM demo heads but not the Forged or Tour. I was looking at the 919 Forged full set they had and the only thing that gave me pause was that the short irons looked a bit elongated (which is to be expected by design) so i just want to see what they've done with the 921 Forged short irons since they specifically said they made those more compact. May need to have a couple of backup iron sets this year, jeez everything coming out is so good it's very hard not to have FOMO with just one iron set.

So I couldn't help myself. My teaching pro just signed with Mizuno and our head pro is with Ping. Its always a battle for my loyalties. Last week we just got in the latest Swing Analyzer Fitting system and we put it through the paces today. I tried the HMB, 921 Tour and Forged. I must say I went in thinking the HMB were going to be the best looking but the Forged edged them out and the Tours are gorgeous. The toplines are thinner on the 921. During the session the analyzer spit out the same 3 shafts it always does, 1. X100 softstepped 2. PX 6.0 and PX LZ 6.0. We tried only the PX as I know I don't like the X100. Using the upright heads, the Tour was best in feel and turf interaction. I was leaning that way but I ended up with the Forged as I want more help. I know in the winter months when my HC creeps up I'll be mad I do not have the most help possible. As we went through the analyzer fitting process, we chose 1/4 over length, it recommended .5* upright but I went a full degree, traditional lofts which are 2* weak and grip with wraps. I was surprised with the loft options. The program has 3 different loft combos built into it and makes it easy as Mizuno has already built the right gapping for each. Of course you can customize further if wanted. Pro pushed the order button and we got confirmation right there on the order. I live about 3 miles from Mizuno's national distribution center so I told my Pro to tell the rep I'll drop by and pick them up tomorrow...?

Hey @Warrick I did go with Blackout LZs. I was torn because I was worried about wear and scratches. I seem to remember you said they wear well. I am not tough on my clubs but I don't baby them in the bag. If these shafts rub around on each other, will the finish come off? I walk with a cart a lot and they do bump around.
