Mizuno JPX 921 Tour, Forged, JPX-921 Hot Metal & JPX921 Hot Metal Pro irons: In-hand photos

Well, got fit today and was pretty open to what the results were.  Hit the T100-s, HMB, 921F, and apex combo.  921F won out pretty convincingly.  Was quite surprised.  Playing Gen 1 0311 with Steelfibers now.  I have a super consistent decent angle of 50,  (all clubs with shafts had a variation of 45.5-51) and spin my 0311 in the 6400 range.  With that decent angle I can lower my spin and pick up some yards and not have a fear of holding greens.  Did that with the Forged. With recoils I was down to 5900 spin and gained ball speed 4 mph and same 50 decent angle and gained 10 yards.  Crazy to me.

so putting in an order for 921F, recoils and the Blue custom ferules.  The rep told me they had been pretty caught up on the JPX line and thought a week was possible.  I laughed to myself with the long lead times here so I’m not getting my hopes up yet.

I was told the ferules and recoils were no up charge.  Sweet.  Steelfibers were $40/club and I had slightly more spin and similar ball speed so no need to pay for the up charge.

Has anyone ordered 921 hmp 4i, forged 5-9, and tour pw and gw?  Wondering how this combo would work out.  Would just have to bend tour pw and forged 5i 1 deg strong and maintain the 4 deg gap in long irons which I prefer.

First new set of irons in 15 years.  JPF921 Forged 5-6 and Tour 7-PW with PX LZ 6.0.  I haven't played a round yet, but I have managed to get three sessions at the range and so far I am very happy.  I was fitted for 2* up which had me concerned since previously I was always standard or 1* flat, but given the new shafts and the flatter lie of Mizuno's in general I was willing to go along with the recommendation.  There is a tendency to hit left of my target if I don't really focus on a correct face alignment at address and making sure I swing down the line.  I think it is more a matter of getting used to the more upright lie and allowing for my tendency to line up with a close face but until I play a few rounds I will hold off making a decision if I need to bend the lies slightly flatter.  Distance wise I would say they are about 5-8 yards longer per club than my old set.  They don't feel as buttery soft as the 32s, but they are not harsh by any means.  I would say the Forged feel slightly more clicky/firmer than the Tours and the Tours slightly firmer compared to the 32s.  With my old 32s (Rifle 6.0) I was a low ball hitter but with the JPX921s and PX LZ I am hitting the ball higher than I can ever remember and certainly in comparison to the 32s, but as I said with am increase in distance.  Hopefully I can get in a round this weekend!

In my old 32s the loft of 4-PW went from 24* to 47*.  The JPXs go from 25* to 46* for the 5-PW and are 2* stronger (1* for PW) than my MP32s.  Since I carry a 20* hybrid I decided to forego a 4 iron (which would have been 21*), but depending on needs on the course I may end up adding one at a later date.

Side by side comparison with the 32s (on the left).  Heel to toe is noticeably longer, slightly more off-set in the Forged 6 iron, similar in the Tour 7 iron, but the sole width looks very similar between the MPs and JPX.

Mine are 2+ up and no lie board.  I used a line on the ball and a sticker on club face.

Unfortunately yes, hence the reason for my concern!  When I questioned the reliability of the lie board we also did the line on the ball method which not unsurprisingly confirmed that 2* upright resulted in a level strike.  Since my fitter didn't have access to a any type of swing monitor I went with his recommendation.  After I get out on the course and see how my shots go I will probably follow-up with someone who measure my lie angles, face angle and ball flight electronically and have them adjusted accordingly.

I hit 921 F a lot at the golf store and love the feel, distance and dispersion.

One thing I noticed is lower launch angle and lower spin. Recently changed my swing to have more forward press and it helped my direction of the ball but flight is lower than usual.

Still happy with it because it doesn't bring out my blocks and sways.

I am going to get fitted at Club champions next week and hope they don't push other brand on me.

No club fitter worth their weight should push one brand over another. If you want the 921s, find the *right* 921 for you, that YOU like. There are 4 versions of the 921, HM, HMP, F and T, and lots of that comes down to looks, feel, and workability (can you work the ball/shot shape? Or do you swing and hope you make contact? Smaller head? Top lines? Some people just care how they look in the bag. 😉 Then once you get the head figured out, then you want to find the right shaft that matches how you load and make your swings with that shaft in that head. What's the shot shape? Distance? What are YOU looking to *fix* (if anything?) have a fade/draw you're trying to work around? A shaft IMHO is the most important thing to get fitted for. Head? You can go with anyone and it'd come down to how it feels.

I received my set yesterday.  I went with:

5-6 - HM

7-PW - HMP

GW - Forged

I haven't had the chance to hit them yet but I will say that I am surprised at how much larger the HM 5 and 6 irons are compared to the HMP.  When I hit the HM and HMP 7 irons at a fitting I didn't find them to be that different at address. I also looked at both full sets in the store and didn't notice a huge difference.

I haven't hit them yet so I'm just making an observation.  I was a bit hesitant about having the HM in the set, especially the 6 iron (was originally just thinking of doing the 5 iron HM and the rest HMP) due to the larger heads, but my fitter made a good point when he said "you don't need the club to look sexy when you're 180 yards from the hole in the rough."  Fair point.  As long as they perform I'll be happy.

I'm coming from the MX-200 irons which have a much longer and taller face than the HMP, so the larger 5 and 6 hot metals hopefully won't bother me too much.

Can't wait to hit them and see...

I’m in between the Hot Metals and HMP with the only detraction from the Hot Metals is the increased offset.  How noticeable is the offset at address?

For those getting sets with custom ferrules, is that something that Mizuno is able to do at the factory or are your builder's just ordering the parts and assembling them for you with ferrules you provide?

My understanding is that Mizuno has a limited supply of the blue and white ferrules and can install them on jpx 921s and mp20s if you order them. There might be a 5$ up charge for them. Just tell your shop to look for the ferrules or have them call Mizuno.

If I recall the scoring irons have less offset  in the HMP vs the 919 and I believe the longer irons are about the same as the 919

That was another one of my concerns in blending the forged and tours given that the stock lofts of the forged 6 and tour 7 are 27* and 34* respectively resulting in a 7* gap.  My fitter said said he would check with his Mizuno rep and see what he recommended.  Turns out Mizuno has recommendations for just about any combination of HM, HMP, Forged and Tours you want with the result being a consistent 4* gap between clubs.  In my set where the transition from forged to tour was 6/7 the recommendation was bending the 5 1* weak, the 6 2* weak, the 7-9 1* strong and leaving the PW standard.  Based on the chart from Mizuno the adjustment varied depending the clubs you choose to make the transition; i.e., the recommendations depend on whether the transition is 4-5, 5-6, or 6-7.  Bottom line for anyone considering a combo set have your fitter check with Mizuno.

but i haven’t seen them yet in person.
