  • 2 weeks later...

Young, indestructible (for a time), enormously physically and mentally gifted, and hungry to prove himself. Now he is (relatively) old, (relatively) fragile, and has nothing left to prove to anyone, so yeah. Pretty simple.

He won by 5 shots in a junior tournament.. Tiger is his caddie..

I don't have high expectations for Charlie's golf, too big of a shadow to want to live in your whole career...

His back won't let him practice.  And you aren't going to compete in Majors by only playing once in 6 months leading up to it.  He's going to play in a few events before the US Open.  I think he'll be in a little better form there if he does.  But, if you can't practice your putting, your chipping, your sand play... you're going to get what we saw from him at Harding Park.  His swing looked good, but he wasn't tuned in.

Priorities are different when you're a 20-something kid who's only focus is to be the GOAT vs. a 40-something dad who's done most all of it already.

Everything, absolutely everything.

Vintage Tiger was better in every department of the game than the current Tiger. His driving was always crooked but back then, he always seemed to be near Number 1 in distance. Iron play is still great but it’s not number 1. Did you ever see Vintage Tiger duff a chip? Did your ever see Vintage Tiger stand over a 5 footer and even think that it might not go in?

Driving has been better with the new Tiger a couple times. Straighter beats longer.
Iron play is still near the top if not the best.
Vintage Tiger duffed chips but often holed out the next, that is a difference.
Putting is so reliant on practice, and he cannot practice as much with family, less focus/obsession and his back.
Apart from all of this, his swing looks awesome (with a fused back ffs!), he beat a stacked leaderboard in a major, so I’m very happy he’s still around and can surprise his doubters and himself once in a while with a win. 18 is out of reach, I think.

Straighter beats longer would seem to fly against much of what we have learnt from Strokes Gained etc but I take the point that there has been odd weeks where he has found the short stuff more than he seemed to.

I am with you, I am as delighted that he has come back and been able to compete the way that he has done but Vintage Tiger vs the current iteration bears little comparison unfortunately.

Tiger 1.0 was a literal machine.  Which is why tiger  3.0 is a broken man that gets it together when he can. The amount of practice time between the two is night and day.

For the same reason as every sportsman in every sport, age catches up on you.

Tiger isn't as good these days, but is a much more likeable person and player than he was in his peak years. He was a stone cold killer in his 20s but seemed to miss out on being human to do it.  Tiger continued to play well into the late 00s but he was always heading for a serious crash and flew too close to the sun. This decade has humbled him and since 2018 he has been a more rounded person.

If Tiger wins once or twice a year from now on, that would be a tremendous achievement.

Current Tiger to me looks a little disinterested. He was the greatest grinder of all time. Now if putts aren't falling he looks defeated. If he wasn't playing for 18/83 I'm not sure he would be out there.

I feel like he is playing for legacy and the drive to be the greatest.

Mentally he is probably half the player he was.

I genuinely don't think he is too focused off the course. On the course he is always going to be tiger and have up and down rounds, but off the course he seems much more family oriented than anything else. Looks like he's really starting to live a life outside of golf, and when he's playing its more of a "if I win I win" attitude.

It really is all practice time, it's a shame he isn't healthy because I think this incarnation of his golf swing is probably the best apart from stretches of 2000 and 2007.

Mark my words, Charlie doesn't care and he will be #1 in the world at some point.

If he decides to make golf his goal in life he won't have a choice but to care because that's who he's going to be compared to and that's a lot to live up to.

How often do the greats kids follow their parents and go on to be great

but as for Tiger now...age, injuries and kids that are older and probably wants to enjoy some of that money

I still consider him to be the GOAT

Of course he has a choice...he can choose to let it affect him negatively, or he can use it as fuel.

I know the rule is that he won't be a great golfer, but I am guessing he's going to be the exception.

Tiger won't force him into golf but he will be an unbelievable coach, and Charlie already appears to have a love for the game.

Of all games, golf is one where it helps a lot to have your father be Tiger Woods and able to get you into all of the places you need to be and show you how to swing, putt, etc.. Whereas with something like basketball, there was just no way Michael Jordan's kids were going to be as talented as him.

If CW pursues competitive golf, it will be vastly different that TWs experience with Earl. Just different all around.

But, he may just catch a flame to his inner drive find a total passion the way TW did to relentlessly pursue his best.

I wonder if TW taught CW the game from “the green back” the way EW taught TW?

Elin clearly has some genes, she’s probably like 5’10  or something herself.

Lol, be crazy to see TWs kid out there on tour one day.

Vintage Tiger was so dominant in nearly all facets of the game that he didn’t have to be as clutch as today.

Also kind of like Mike Tyson before him, Tiger spent his whole life creating a cloak of invincibility that was nearly unbreakable. But once it’s cracked, the crack only becomes wider and deeper never to be as strong as it was.

Just go watch some Vintage Tiger on you tube,

Then watch some of Tiger's play from the last 2 years, also on you tube, you should be able to draw your own conclusions.  Watch his  2019 Master's win. Still  the best  in the game, but his win frequency is no where near what it was in 2000.

Play Golf.....Play Blades......Play Something Else.....Just Go Play.....
