2020 TaylorMade SIM UDI and SIM DHY in-hand Pics. Comparison pics added...

Received my UDI #2 today. I’ve been experimenting a lot at the long end of my bag. I go back and forth between an Apex Pro Dot 4-iron and a 23* RSI TP UDI both with PX LZ 6.5. A Tour Edge EXS Pro 20* w/Tensei 75X has the hybrid spot locked in. Between the hybrid and the driver it’s been a steady rotation this season. The 20* hybrid is a reliable 245yds and has been the best hybrid I’ve played since the old Adams Idea Pro back in the day.

The 3-wood has always been a strong club for me off the tee- a G410LST since it came out and I messed around with a SIM Ti Rocket this year(way too long). Buuut I’ve gotten a little erratic off the tee this year, thus the experimenting. I had the first gen P790 UDI and picked up the second gen when it released last year. It’s an awesome club, low flat ball flight, covers a thin miss ok but really kills my toe miss. Solid shots are 260-265yds carry, typically plenty of roll- a good and bad thing depending on the need and conditions.

So being a true club ‘ho I had to try the SIM UDI. It’s noticeably larger than the P790 UDI, more offset, thicker top line, thicker sole, maybe a touch longer blade(the thicker profile makes it almost look shorter). Probably not the ideal look in my eye- I’d prefer slimmer, but this is a driving club for me and I’ll gladly take some forgiveness and consistency in trade for sex appeal in the bag.

if it produces the same carry as the P790 with more forgiveness on the toe I’ll be happy. As long as its not spinning too much and ballooning it could stay in the bag.

I’ll update with launch monitor numbers when I can, I’ll have it on the course for the first round this Sunday.

Until then here are some comparison pictures- P790 HZRDUS Smoke on the right, SIM UDI Thump on the left

I got the first round in with the SIM UDI this morning. Had the chance to hit it back and forth with the P790 UDI on the range before the round.

The P790 feels awesome- its not forged blade soft, but for a utility it feels great and solid, not hollow or tinny.

The SIM? Not so great feeling.  It's not awful, just not as soft- it's almost a numb feel. You get enough feedback to know where you made contact, just not a sensation that makes you want to hit it just for the feel.

On the range the SIM launched a hair lower which was a surprise. Because of the lower launch the P790 was carrying noticeably longer(On the range). On the course I only played the SIM, and that was only off the tee. Off the tee the launch was ideal, ballflight was flat and straight. Despite what looks like more offset there was no tendency to turn over more than the 790, and spin seemed plenty low. Distance was excellent, though I have no idea how much was carry and how much was roll

The highlight of the SIM was the added forgiveness, helped cover my toe miss and was extremely consistent in distance on a slightly thin miss.

When it comes to a tee club Im not too concerned with feel. I want a club that goes the distance I need and is easy to keep in play. I still need a course to myself and time on a launch monitor to get numbers on each but so far the SIM did what I wanted it to.

Ok, starting to think the Diamana Thump shaft is part of the reason for the lack luster feel of these new driving irons. I first had the SIM UDI and now the SIM DHY with the same Thump shaft. Really dead feeling and no feel. Before I spend anymore money on this thing, did anyone find a better shaft that worked for them in this thing? Since I have Fuji Pro95 graphite shafts in my irons, thinking of giving this a try in the DHY.

Also had to throw on some lead tape to see if a heavier SW would help (and it did). Just looks crappy on there. Anyone notice a trajectory change switching to a heavier weighted screw?

Great, looking forward to your thoughts.  Was wondering if a hybrid shaft would be good or standard long iron shaft.

Has anyone had the opportunity to hit these? How easy are they to hit? DHY obviously easier to hit than UDI, but hopefully not too much of a gap in forgiveness between the two

I got to hit them recently. A solid few notes: SIM UDI easier to hit than p790 UDI, offers a little more forgiveness. Also, I swear it looks chunkier at address, maybe its the coloring of the black pad on the back but that may just be me. DHY is very much like the GAPR Mid, as I think someone mentioned. Good comparison but goes high and rocket far. Performance improvement from previous UDI and GAPR respectively, looks don't do it for me though but data is always KING!!!

I'm replying to your question about hybrid shafts over here so as to not derail the other thread.

Given that you're already using pretty lightweight iron shafts, finding the right compliment for a utility/driving iron can be tricky. Do you have the Thump 90 or 100? Either way, the Pro95 is a very different shaft profile wise, and has quite a low balance point which could be why the DHY with the Thump felt lighter to you. That or it is just built lighter. Regardless, I might try another Pro95 in the DHY and take advantage of aftermarket weights to dial things in if you need to. Other options to look in to that are a similar profile and fairly neutral in terms of balance point would be the Nippon Modus3 GOST hybrid shaft and the KBS Tour Prototype Hybrid shaft, both either 85g or 95g.

Yes, thump 90. Guessing the DHY was designed for a lighter shaft and maybe why heavier shafts are SW'ing close to C7-C8. Will definitely look into both the GOST and KBS hybrid shaft. Thanks for the suggestions.

The stock swingweight is supposed to be D2, the only reason a heavier shaft would swingweight lower is if it had a higher balance point, and even then dropping from D2 to C7-C8 is still too far. Have you shortened the club at all or are you using heavier grips? Also, if you could post all the relevant specs (length, weight, grip etc) of your next longest iron then I can make a more informed recommendation.

Played last weekend and the sim udi and dhy were standouts. I have a Mitsubishi mmt 105tx utility shaft on the way for the udi 2 iron. The dhy looked odd when I bought the club but once I got it on the course and played it I didn’t notice looks. Easy to hit high bombs off the tee and still can hit off the fairway

I hit the SIM UDI again tonight. I was swinging better and got much better results than I did the first time.. I was hitting the 2 utility with the thump 100x shaft. Launch was right at 17-18 degrees, about 160 ball speed and right at 3000 spin.

I still think it feels more firm that I would like but at least I was getting the performance I think I should.

The DHY appears to be getting all the love and a lot of ppl are raving about its performance. I think the SIM UDI is far underrated and its performance will shine for those players that play in windy conditions and have par fives where chasing the ball on is an option.  i think the launch can be improved in the SIM UDI with a more active tip shaft perhaps.

The udi didn't disappoint today.  I used it to tee off on 2 short par 4.   It actually worked out perfect to where i needed to hit a draw on one and a fade on the other.  It was easy to hit both.  Flight is nice... not ballooning, but not too low either.

I can't wait to see if it can hold some par 5 greens.

Used by 3 DHY today, all off the tee.

Apart from one semi-shank ?, I hit it well and definitely think I'm going to use it loads.

Do we know if the lie of it can be adjusted?

Handed it in to our Pro Shop afterwards to get it moved +2 upright but the Pro is checking with TaylorMade on Monday as he's worried as it's forged the head will snap.

The TM custom page for the SIM DHY shows both loft and lie can be bent + or - 2*.

Anyone comment on how the dhy is from the fairway/rough?

I have and it seems to be performing very well but I am still in the honeymoon phase. The face seems hot as hell and I think that helps when you step on it a little. The heel to toe length is fairly long so it certainly won't cut through like a butter knife but they have been winners for me so far.

I bought a 4 and 5 and spec'd them exactly like my iron set with GD DI-85 Hybrid shafts as well. Love them right now. Took some $$$ off my buddy today and the DHY's were very active. Sleeping with them tonight to take the relationship to the next level. Wifey might get flustered if she kicks around to much. :pimp:

How’s the Thump shaft play?  Wondering if I should have it tipped.  TXG referred to it as “soft” in their review video.  Currently have a DG X100 in a P790 UDI, but interested in the SIM UDI for a little bit more forgiveness.  Lighter shaft could be good also, but still need it to be stable.

Over the weekend I finally had the chance to hit the DHY 2 iron I had built up. Initial impressions, so far so good. I'm playing it at standard loft/length/lie with the Diamana Thump 90s tipped 1/2 in lieu of the stock Diamana Limited. Length-wise, it's physically (grip to tip) longer than any iron i've ever owned, so that's a little different. Choking down about an inch seems like where a 2iron would be based on my current iron setup.

On the range, the thing was a superstar off the mat. I didn't have a way to tee it up as low as I wanted to, but still could get it elevated up in the air pretty easily. Trajectory was very boring and not overly high or low. I'm traditionally a high ball hitter, hence the Thump. The ball comes off the face hot, with a bit of a "crack" sound to it. Obviously, feel leaves much to be desired, but I kinda knew going into it that this club is built differently with a different goal in mind, so i'm ok with it. I let my lil brother hit it as well (he's also single digit/close to scratch), and he mentioned it felt similar to an old set of R7 CGB Max's he played when he was a tween looking for distance.

On course, I only had the opportunity to hit it twice. One was a 241 yd par 3 which I thought set up perfectly yardage-wise. Even though it was on a tee, I slightly mishit it and it still ended up close to pin-high left. I was pleasantly surprised, but also a little concerned that maybe it goes a lil further than I was hoping (was looking to plug this in as a 235-240 club max). The other time I tried to see if I could elevate it quick enough to get over the lip of a fairway bunker... it did not, lol. Lesson learned. The club seems to definitely be forgiving.

Thinking about swapping out the shaft for maybe the Ventus Blue HB, but want to get it out on the monitor first so I can set a baseline from which to compare. Perhaps it may change the feel more towards what I'm accustomed to having played blades and Mizunos all this time (probably not haha). But so far, the club is acting just how I was hoping - relatively straight and more consistent than any of the normal hybrids I've played up until now. Will need to really hone in on how far I hit it though... if this thing goes closer to 250, then I may need to consider swapping out for the 3 instead.

Not sure if the specs are correct on TM's website, but the UDI is listed as more offset (3.2mm) than the DHY (3.0mm), which seems odd. But it could be chalked up to the UDI being more driving-iron type, and the DHY kind of leaking into the GAPR Mid/hybrid category. Also, has anybody tried either UDI/DHY with the KBS TGI 80S shaft? May be a bit light and soft for most you guys, but interested to see if anybody has gone that route, or if anyone has shafted either with a steel iron shaft? Thanks
