Vokey SM8 Black Finish to Raw

I know I've seen other posts on removing the black finish from Vokey wedges, but wondering if anyone has tried on the new SM8s? I'm planning on using the white vinegar method, and I can post pics as I complete the process but wanted to see if anyone else has tried yet.

Looks great! I’m debating going back to Vokey’s after wandering eye had me gaming Glide 3.0s this past year. I just miss the distance control of Vokeys. Might have to get the black ones and strip them down to raw.

Does the CLR or Vinegar eat at the ferrule?

I haven’t used CLR on the SM8s but did use it on my SM7s. I always use caution not to soak the ferrule in the CLR by placing the wedge in a bucket and filling to the top edge of the wedge. I never noticed any issues with the ferrule though.

I can’t speak for vinegar but the clr has never eaten a ferrule

Does any one have a pic with a bit of actual rust on them? The sticker on the wedge says it will rust, but I'm skeptic. Looking for a poor mans raw wedge ?

How do you like the combo. I’ve used the F in the 54* and D in the 58* but thinking of moving to the S and M like you got there. Mostly because I rarely hit full shots and the bunkers I play are mostly packed sand

Yep. I guess I never grew up in my liking pro rasslin haha

So far I’m pleased.  I’ve used a 58M many times in the past, so I’m familiar with the advantages and shortcomings.  The 54S has really  been a pleasant surprise.  I almost exclusively use it with a square face and I find it super versatile.  It’s become a go-to club for me very quickly.

Bringing this back up. Just curious, how long do you soak in the CLR? And how much time do you spend on sanding them??

Curious as well. I have a black 60* that is wearing off and would like to go to raw

Mine took a couple hours in the clr bath... the sanding only took like 3-4 mins total to get the look I wanted

Soak for an hour, take out and give it a quick sand, give it a rinse, just repeat process until black finished removed, usually if you do this 3 times it should be raw (i always use a dremel with a soft wire attachment, i get a better finish and it does it a lot quicker)

Mine looked like that after 3-4 hours. Thinking back, I left mine in the clr probably 6 hours.

I soaked mine for an hour at a time, for a total of 3 hours.

They're close, soak them again in a clean batch of CLR then scrub them down with a 3M pad.

Tested positive for covid today but since I feel pretty much normal you guys inspired me. This is after a few soaks in white vinegar and some fine sandpaper. Didn’t have any CLR handy. 
 

Not complete yet but not bad.

Were your Vokes brand new when you decided to "bathe" them?  I mistakenly did not wipe a set of SM6's down with alcohol and they got marginal results with spottiness... second dunk I cleaned and wiped down and the black was then gone after just one more try.

 

Don't forget to thoroughly clean the wedges and wipe down with alcohol to get rid of any evidence of oils before soaking in CLR or DWV.

Brand new. Might try to soak it once more

Went with CLR and 1000 grit yesterday, worked great. Definitely could have soaked them for longer but I like the little bit of the black finish still there.

I'm not sure if it was just me but I had a hard time getting my 56 and 60 to rust after removing the finish. The 48 rusted perfectly. And this was after playing a bunch of rounds in very wet conditions. Not proud to admit this but I finally decided to artificially add rust by soaking a paper towel in a salt water solution and blotching it over the back on the wedges. Finally was able to get some rust on there.
