Vokey SM8 Black Finish to Raw

I'm not sure if it was just me but I had a hard time getting my 56 and 60 to rust after removing the finish. The 48 rusted perfectly. And this was after playing a bunch of rounds in very wet conditions. Not proud to admit this but I finally decided to artificially add rust by soaking a paper towel in a salt water solution and blotching it over the back on the wedges. Finally was able to get some rust on there.

Bumping this up - seems very hit and miss wether people are having any luck getting the stripped finish to rust.

What’s left after a clr bath clearly isn’t pvd but is it some sort of plating? what would it actually take to get stripped to raw if I were to take to an electro plater? Thanks!

Went with CLR and 1000 grit yesterday, worked great. Definitely could have soaked them for longer but I like the little bit of the black finish still there.

Yep. I guess I never grew up in my liking pro rasslin haha

CLR and 1000 grit sandpaper got me this finish

I did it a month ago maybe, looked very similar to what others did on this thread and they haven't really rusted at all. I think this is more due to the fact that I didn't completely remove the black finish so there must still be some left protecting it. I used acetone on an SM7 once and that did the trick pretty well. I think with CLR you have to really make sure you get everything off with the sandpaper, I can see littles spots of rust but nothing major.

I've done some more research and i'm yet to see a stripped wedge that has actually rusted.

There are two treatments to the raw wedge. One is a melonite finish which reduces corrosion, and the second is a black oxide applied over the treated melonite finish. CLR etc can strip the black oxide finish, but what you're left with is different from a totally raw wedge...the melonite finish is lighter but penetrates into the metal.

I'm going to try using the peroxide vinegar spray to see if that makes a difference, but otherwise you're just better off forking out for straight raw wedge if thats what you're after

Can anyone confirm if the wedge will actually rust like a raw version after doing this?  Thanks in advance!

I actually find them better than a normal raw wedge, i find normal raw wedges rust too quickly, my Sm7's rust but takes a bit more time

OP here- can't believe it took me so long to get back on here...guess that's what having a baby will do!

I went the white vinegar route on my 54 and my 60 and something really interesting happened...my 54 had a way different reaction after being soaked for 24 hours. It came out looking almost like marble, and to be honest I was really digging it so didn't do anything about it. Interestingly enough, the vokey design stamp also seemed to rust immediately.

My 60, on the other hand, came out looking really clean the first time. I like the really rough, raw look to both of my wedges, which is what I was going for. Having said that, looking at some of the other photos posted here they do look absolutely gorgeous after putting some additional work into them after the soak.

Attaching some photos. Note: the 60 degree photo was just taken this morning after a half season of play, plus even some winter rounds here in the Chicagoland area.

Do you guys sand the face as well? How does that effect the grooves/milling?

Yeah I did, with 1000 grit sandpaper its not going to impact the grooves or milling at all.

That is incredibly cool if that holds up like that.

Stupid question, but if you want a rusted wedge why not just buy the raw version to start?

It costs $40 more

After hours researching old threads on here I tackled my SM6s a couple years ago. Hour or two in a vinegar bath then scrubbed down with scotch bright pads. Eventually I got them exactly where I wanted them and they have held that finish ever since.

When, just a matter of when I wanna spend a car payment on wedges, I do this again to my SM8s I will let them soak over night probably and hit them with a scotch brite until they are how I want. (Saw a youtube video of a guy letting them soak for a long time and he could have blown the black finish off)....

I like the patina look but the "greyed" out look my SM6s have is awesome. They are as "raw" as they can look and hold very little rust...what I wanna get good at is stamping

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
