Iron distances, am I hitting it too far?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I’m currently playing mizuno mp-h4 irons with s300 shafts and have been since spring 2017. Every year I seem to hit the ball longer and longer. My normal carry distance I expect from a 7 iron would be in the neighborhood of 195. My highest lofted club my 58* lob wedge is around my 125 club. At last check my driver club head speed was approaching 120. I feel like I the distance I’m hitting the ball may be hurting my game. I’m wondering if I’m having an issue getting too much lag on the club head and taking loft off causing these numbers or if I have another swing mechanic that causes this.

Please post video of your swing. Would be interesting to see how you generate that kind of speed.

Hard to know if they yardages are too much without knowing your launch angles, spin, peak heights, and angles of descent.
When it comes to irons, it is about the full package of numbers rather than just the carry distance.

No such thing as too far unless you can't hit and hold greens. If you're distance and accuracy isn't consistent, then all that length isn't good for anything other than long drive contests.

Definitely too much lag. Lots of threads on how you can get less. ;-)
Kind of hard to take this seriously at first glance, but agree - post up a vid of the swing and that should reveal whether the ss numbers are approaching being accurate and whether how you are getting there may be or may not be an issue. If it's real distance, don't see how it could be hurting your game since you don't identify any negative results.

OP has me thinkin' maybe my 135 yard 7 iron might be a bit too long for the course I play.

Okay, I’ll bite: what exactly IS your problem? Can’t you just practice partial shots for everything under 125? Nothing wrong with being a long hitter, your post just comes across as a not-so-humblebrag, so could you tell us what’s the actual issue?

Not sure what too far means? Too far to reach the hole on every shot. Too far to shooting lights out and qualifying in tournaments. Distance dont mean as much if you done have the second part of that equation into the hole.

I found this topic because I have a similar issue, I'm not an experianced golfer. My driver headspeed is around 120. I can control my full-swing shots well, my 7 carries 185, and my P 155. My 60 degree carries 110. The problem is inside of 110, if I dont chunk the ball trying to half-swing I get the distance wrong. And the majority of the game seems to be played inside 110.

My best performance so far comes from opening my 60 face and still doing a full swing to ensure good connection but distance and accuracy are really tough for me to judge when I open the face. The only time I feel like I know what I'm doing is when there's a trap between me the green 30 yards out, I open my face and hit a rocket straight up and down looking like a pro. But then I do the same thing when there's no sand or tree in the way. I would say 70% of the time I mis-judge how much to open the face though.

What do you think? Clubs beyond 60 degrees? More practice with half-swings? Or maybe a new technique that slows the head-speed?

I played in a 18-hole best ball last week and my team never used anything of mine, I have nothing to brag about.

You understand most professional golfers don’t hit the ball as long as you do, right? What’s your handicap?

Seriously. You’re focused on distance when you shouldn’t be. What do you not understand?

Maybe you're responding the wrong guy. I'm stating my problem is that I only hot well with a full swing, and my full swing plays at 110+. I'm looking for advice inside of 110, should I use a different swing technique that slows the head speed? Should I purchase a 70 degree club? Or should I keep trying to learn the half-swing?

However at this point I wouldn't use your advice, you seem eager to put others down that don't know how to golf rather that lift them up.

You can choke down to take some distance off, but ultimately to score well and reach your potential you will have to learn partial shots.  All good players do.  Super high lofted wedges are primarily used for specialty shots around the green.
