Not sure how much of this got out there with all the other things going on, this was a wicked dude that rolled through Iowa and several other states last Monday.

I live in Des Moines.  No power for a couple of days.  The neighbor about four houses down lost a tree that snapped the wire and blocked the road for a while.

I hear Cedar Rapids is worse.

We were only out about 10, but I have a Generac home standby, so 10 seconds for me.

Nasty storm

I'm sure most of us have witnessed constant winds 70mph for 3-5 min and saw the damage that results.  My home course in NE Iowa lost about 20 trees this Spring during a wind storm with just a few 50-60 mph gust winds.  Now think about a 80-110 mph constant wind with higher gusts up to 140 mph for 25-45 minutes long.  I don't even know how wide of a path it was, but it left a disaster zone similar to a very large hurricane damage path.  Preliminary estimates had CR losing over 50% of its mature trees.  As a weather nerd, I love a good storm.  Man that storm was just unbelievable, it was not forecasted by any weather experts, and was incredibly powerful.  Unfortunately, it was also devastating to many people.  I know a few people that farmed in the area and they lost everything they had.  Buildings, bins, crops, homes, that they, and the generations before them, worked so long and hard for.  Many people now have the hard decision on whether to patch up their damaged homes or tear down and start over.   I was not in the affected area, but, wow, the aftermath is hard to believe.

We stayed home and rode out Hurricane Ike in 08. It was a CAT 4 just before landfall, and made landfall as a  CAT 3 (111-129mph winds). It came right over the top of our town just east of Houston (on the upper cost of the bay here). Hours of 110+ mph winds, then the eye which was freaky calm, then a couple more hours of 110+ mph winds as the back half of the storm blew over. There were times it sounded like the roof was going to come off of the house. It was not a fun time. It was a wild experience and one I'll never forget for sure. Unfortunately, due to my wife's occupation, we cannot evacuate in storms. We had to stick around and watch everything flood during Harvey a few years ago as well. The only advantage we have with hurricanes is we generally know where they're going to make landfall a few days out. I've seen them turn when no one predicted it, but generally speaking, they're pretty good at getting the location right. I couldn't imagine getting caught in something like that that you didn't know was coming or how big it was or really any information about it.

They have a time lapse on radar of the development, maybe 45 minutes notice. It was crazy how this thing developed, out of nothing.

Yeah, that's just nuts. For hurricanes, we know about them and start watching them when they are crossing the atlantic usually. There are some that pop up out of just a big storm over the carribean, but even those we usually have several days notice before they rock our world.
