Is Taylormade now crap

MaddMaxx

Recommended Posts

Seems like the feeling around my club is that the quality of Taylormade has really declined. Chinese crap, specs way off, breakage are are few of the comments I have heard. I will be shopping for irons in the off season and am thinking not to even look at Taylormade.

Is it really true what I have heard?

You do know that TM has made Chinese made clubs going back decades?  I specifically remember the TM 300 forged were forged in China, Japan, and even Mexico.  30 years ago your OP might hold true but now the Chinese have it down to a science.

Being on spec and quality has nothing to do with where something is physically made but about the level of quality control and meeting spec the buyer is willing to pay for. If TM is crap, which I doubt they are any more than any other club company, its because they aren't willing to pay for quality not because of where its made. The vast majority of clubs from all brands have been made in China for decades. The worst quality club heads I have ever seen in regards to meeting specs were made in the USA Wilson Staff models. The QC on those were pathetic.

I certainly haven't heard that. The SIM driver in particular is EVERYWHERE at my club.

And if I was in the market for irons, the new 770's would absolutely be on the list to hit.

I kind of suspect everything (not just golf clubs) is coming from China.

Does anybody manufacture their stuff elsewhere.

I am leaning towards Titleist, ping  or Callaway.

Is it standard to ask that the specs be verified at time of purchase?

I am pretty sure they dont buy their clubs from the pro shop at my course.

Not sure, but Bridgestone and Srixon could be forged in Thailand. There are always Japan boutique brands - a long long list of high quality sticks.

If you want to buy clubs that are made in the USA, you should look into really old clubs that were made before China made everything.  But this is Golfwrx, who in their right mind buys 30+ year old stuff? ?

Callaway is made in China, and assembled in mexico.

Sounds like your club is full of old crotchety men who don't like the TaylorMade style. They literally have the most talked about driver this year and probably most talked about iron release in a while, but yeah they definitely suck.

I’ve not had any issues with my M5 driver, M5 3W, or SIM driver, and they’ve seen a lot of action. I have heard of some issues with the back weight on the SIM, but that is an easy fix.

Every OEM has issues with quality from time to time, not just TM. Any carbon fiber club for sure, and I've seen more cracked Pings than any other driver.

It's not standard, but it should be...

It honestly doesn't take that long to do, and most major golf stores have the equipment on hand. I had a buddy at Golf Galaxy run through my specs on some irons I'd bought used... It took him about 20 minutes for five clubs, and he adjusted 2 of them. He charged me maybe $20?

It just depends on the brand and company... it also depends on where you buy them from.

@Sub70Golf checks all their build specs before shipping, I believe...

The shop I use checks and adjusts specs on everything that comes in. Mizuno swingweights can be all over the place, and they're a very good company with excellent products. If you have a factory build, checking the specs is just part of the process. The big knock against Taylormade really goes back to the prior corporate leadership and their constant new product introduction. While some people love them, the SLDR was not a step forward. Making a crown white instead of black was unique but it was just marketing. I personally think they missed the mark with the M5. Too many potential weight adjustments, and if you don't have access to tour reps you'll likely never get to the optimized setting. SIM is the superior progression of that concept. That brings up the risk of being first with some technology, like speed slots and injection. So no, I don't think TM is garbage, although they've had some rockier patches 5-10 years ago or so.

$h!t happens and clubs break from every manufacturer, but from what I've heard, TM does a pretty good job of getting these things worked out for customers. If I didn't buy new irons earlier this year, I'd be all over the 770's without any hesitation.
