Hybrids only, no fairways?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of pulling my fairway wood (I only carry a 5w) and going with hybrids only.  Why?  Two reasons.  I don't seem to get a lot more distance with the 5w than I do with my 4h and I feel like I'm much more accurate wit the hybrid than the fairway wood.  What I lose in distance I make up with a much more consistent shot.  Anyone else come to this realization?

I’m the opposite.  Driver, fairways and irons.  No hybrids as I can never get along with them with my sweeper swing.  Fairways fit my swing better.

Me, too.  I just ditched the hybrid and added a 7 wood.  It goes straight.  And high.  It's great.

Slower swing speed - fairway wood is almost always the better option. Faster you get the less low/back CG you want (generally). Fairway (slow need launch) --> Hybrid (med flight)--> Driving Iron

I dumped the fairway wood this year in favor of a 17 degree hybrid.  I have found that to be more versatile and I am more confident hitting that versus a fairway.  Just personal preference, but I haven't missed having a fairway wood in the bag as I would only use it a few times a round at most.

Dropped all woods. Playing a 17* and 20* hybrid right now. So much more versatile. So much better off the deck.

I think it depends on course and how you hit from the deck. There are times with a type of rough I would prefer a 4 or 5w to go hard at it vs. using one of my hybrids.

Tight fairway lies, the hybrid sits smoothly at the ball.

nice to have options ?

I thought the goal was to stay on the fairway??

Aside from driver 5wood is the only wood I carry and have considered doing the same. I have a 4 hybrid I hit consistently well and have thought about swapping the 5 wood for a 2 hybrid. The only thing is my hybrid is a TM sim max and TM doesn’t make any 2 hybrid. My second choice is the PING G400 or 410.

really like the ping g400 hybrids. As a newb I hit extremely well with them.

I did that this year.  I used to be all about 3 woods but rarely hit them.  If I had a tight tee shot it was my 17 hybrid. Now you can lower lofts to 13-14 (15.5 in my ping 410).  It doesn't travel as far but then again how many times do I need to hit it 260 to a pin?  I went with two g410s 17 (15.5) and 22 (20.5), with your right shaft, its almost cheating.

I have a true hatred for fairway woods as well but I’m holding back . The Super Hybrid from Callaway is the one I’m leaning toward when I snap.

I think top of bag might be more personal than wedge setup...

I’m contemplating moving to a high lofted, secondary driver... it’s not something I’d recommend for anyone else, but at my home course it will directly replace my three wood for everything but hitting into par fives in 2.

The big question for me is do I just pull the 5w from the bag and put in a 3h and see how it goes?  I don't see how I have that much to lose, especially when I'm losing confidence with the 5w.

That’s exactly what I did and it’s worked out well.  As a minimalist, I find the 3h more versatile and it helps with my gapping.

If I didn’t treat my V-Steel 3W like a magical relic, I probably wouldn’t pick up another FW. I’d likely just work with my 3H and 4 iron for alternatives off the tee and long fairway shots.

As others have mentioned, I dumped a five wood in favor of a 3 hybrid because i found it to be more versatile. Using the hybrid for the odd shot around the green and to glide through thick rough was reason enough for me to make the change. And I don't feel like I lose anything out of the fairway from the wood to the hybrid.

Ultimately, I think there is a strong predisposition to what a bag is "supposed" to have in it. I made a point to recognize it in my game and get rid of clubs I didn't like/use or wasn't confident in. You only get 14 clubs, you may as well enjoy and have a purpose for all of them!

I'm in the same boat. Bought a 3W, couldn't hit it any straighter than my driver off the tee... Traded it down for a 5W, worked well off the deck but could not hit it off the tee to save my life. My 4 Hybrid maxed out around 215-220 range and I really needed something for long par 5s. Finally found a 3H that I liked & pulled the trigger; it's now my go-to 230-240 club depending on the lie & how I hit it.

I agree with this. If you can swing fast enough to get the hybrid up in the air, it'll tend to be longer.

I just switched from a 5W to an 18° hybrid, because I hit the 5W too high. I hit the hybrid further, but the 5W was a better club out of the rough.

I'm up to 3 friends (higher ss players), who I've recommended and helped them go 17* hybrid instead of the fairway wood.

2 inch shorter club is easier to find the center of the face, and if you have the speed, and don't mind the look of the hybrid, seems to work

OP is a slower swinger. Also to the above who mentioned a 2 hybrid, that would only work with reasonable speed. Unless a 90-95mph swinger with that club is excessively flipping and adding loft, no way are they launching that enough to compete with a fairway of that loft.

Generally, higher SS will be better with a hybrid in that spot. I mean, don't tell that to Rory or Tiger though, however I think their 5w is really acting as a 3w for them as a 3w is not really usable as a second shot club. For the most part 3w is an off the tee club and they use 5w into greens.

I'm trying to figure out this part of my bag too. My issue is 3w goes too far on second shots and hybrid is a stretch to get it there. Have been considering 5w but slightly shorter shaft. I think this is a good option for many players. OEMS are trying to squeeze out distance through shaft length which is not a good strategy for most.
