Hey!

I picked one of these up from a TM tour contact recently. Anybody else seen one of these out there?

Pretty rare I'm lead to believe!

I've never seen any Taylormade putter with a branded GSS insert. What sole plate is on that?

Very interesting! I was always under the impression that GSS was a SC thing.

No loads of companies use GSS, its not really a lot different. At the end of the day 303 Stainless Steel is 303. GSS is no 'better' that standard 303 SS its just made in a different country.

Yes, German stainless steel is used by many companies, and yes it's just 303 stainless made in a different country. But "GSS" is a trademark owned by Acushnet and TaylorMade would not be able to use the word on their putters.

Yeah, that is the part that makes this story weird. I can see other people doing stuff like this for inserts but I can't imagine actual TM using the GSS TM (unless it was just some guys messing around in a shop and not clearing it through the top which means it would never actually end up on tour).

From what I've been told it's more of a play about with different options by the guys on the van, definitely not going to be a production model.

Whatever it is, I like it and I can put the ball in the hole with it! ?

Does anyone know the  name of the German-made equivalent to USA 303 SS?  Just curious.

LaMont in AZ

note I am not a Metallurgist by trade,

la mont , 303 you are looking for an International ASTM grade in the range of Astm A582 ss bar grade / billet size    , there are some variants off that

titliest GSS being a trade mark isn’t to my knowledge or it would be a patented grade making a unique grade or recipe of steel.

In a nut shell , they are bc it’s only gss a trade mark ,  some German mill making  Is making it to a common ASTM Grade for those putters, on the basis above.  Now if scotty farts on it and that bakehardens the putter surface , then that would be proprietary   .  IMOP GSS , the magic is in the marketing and face milling depth  , plus a guy that won 15 majors with it .

• 303 most common and easiest to machine

• 304 controls the sulfur , it’s a hair tougher , lots of Time referee to a “surgical ss “ T304

• for reference, you get into the 316 stainless , tougher to machine but used in valves / industrial piping in many applications bc of chemical resistance .

If you had a PMI gun ( which uses radioactive ☢️ isotopes to scan metal for its composition) test a CT GSS putter your could find out the composition of the head and see what grade it walks back to.   To be truly scientific , you’d want a plethora of CT GSS heads bad that would be like 100k worth of putters for a sample size

Ex of 304

Austenitic steels have austenite as their primary phase (face centered cubic crystal). These are alloys containing chromium and nickel (sometimes manganese and nitrogen), structured around the Type 302 composition of iron, 18% chromium, and 8% nickel. Austenitic steels are not hardenable by heat treatment. The most familiar stainless steel is probably Type 304, sometimes called T304 or simply 304. Type 304 surgical stainless steel is austenitic steel containing 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel.

Never seen one but I’ve heard that the pros inserts are metal.

TaylorMade has different Pure Roll inserts available for their tour staff, but you might be surprised to learn that a lot of them are using the black Surlyn inserts (aka plastic). Rahm and Day use it in their Spider X and Spider Tour, respectively, while Morikawa has a black Surlyn insert in his Juno (instead of the aluminum insert that's standard in the blade models).

DJ uses what's called the 80/20 insert in his Itsy Bitsy (it's 80% Surlyn, 20% aluminum). Most of the other players who use Spider X are just using the stock 80/20 white insert that's available at retail (e.g., Rory).

the old black tmag Spiders , vs the red , the black head grey insert was firmer ?? What’s the new ones like ?  DJ Itsy Bitsy, thought it was a regular spider

I had the old DJ spider (black) and now have the spider x with the white insert.  The spider x is noticeably softer but still gives the feedback I am looking for. I would say it is in between the spider black(firm) and red (soft) in terms of feel. My distance control with the x is much improved over the DJ model.  With the DJ model I don’t think I ever left a putt short, usually blasting them bye the hole.

Yep, the gray insert in the black Spider Tour is the 80/20 insert. It's slightly firmer than the black Surlyn insert in the red Spider Tour. DJ has the gray 80/20 insert in his IB.

The white insert in the Spider X is actually an 80/20, but it feels slightly different than the gray one in the black Spider Tour because the Spider X insert is 5mm thick compared to 3mm in the Spider Tour. For me, it felt a little softer than the black Spider Tour and a little firmer than the black insert in the red Spider, but the Spider X felt sort of dead to me. I didn't care for the feel of the X.
