hey people, last minute road trip for the family. kids will be surfing lowers and the wife and i will be playing some golf, drinking and hanging out by the pool. where should we stay and where should we play.dana point area, golf courses?

San Clemente Municipal GC is walkable, inexpensive, & has a fun back nine that goes up into the hillside.(The front nine is pleasant but flat.)

Monarch Beach is a nice fun course, not cheap.  Up the road in Dana Point.  There is also another course in San Clemente (inland) called Talega. I think was designed by Couples.  Used to be kinda fun. No idea what shape it’s in.  Seconding the comments re San Clemente Municipal.

 

A little farther north (maybe 15 minutes) is Arroyo Trabuco - also a nice course.

Used to live in the area.   Played talega a lot.  Good track.  My list of good public courses in the area - south Orange County (best to worst in my opinion):

 

pelican hill south

pelican hill north

Oak creak 

 

Talega, arroyo trabuco, strawberry canyon, dove canyon - take your pick

 

tustin ranch

 

Rancho San juaquin (cheap option that has a decent layout but not in the best shape)

 

San Clemente (cheap; better maintenance than Rancho but layout is boring)

For golf alone, most of the OC daily fee course are decent - The Crossings in Carlsbad is another course just a few miles South.

just stay in San Clemente 

plenty of little food places

close to Trestles

Talega a Brian Curley course

moderate cost

San Clemente Muni cheap muni. Fun course tough to get on 

want to spend a little more stay at Montage Laguna Area

or surf and sand in Laguna right on beach 

 

Arroyo TRABUCO decent public close by as well
