Lydia ko playing steefiber shafts

Recommended Posts

If she’s seen on TV gaming the shafts its safe to say she’s changed shafts. Getty Images shows pics of her using the Steel Fibre shafts too. Ko seems to be forever searching for something that will get her game back to where it was several years back. I guess this is part of that process.

Is there a WITB feature for lady professionals somewhere?

I really hope she finds it.  Her attitude is amazing.

I noticed them quite a bit in the last few tournaments out there. Nordquist? has them in at least something I believe. It could have been the same 3/4 players I kept seeing, but I sure noticed them more than I ever have. I didn't sit and count how many different players were using them.

She needs to go back to her old swing where she pivoted on her back foot instead of center during the back swing.

I'm not sure that I would agree with that.  Lydia is, at present time, longer off of the tee than she was.  She is starting to swing "freer" and without being mentally encumbered with swing mechanics when she steps up to the tee box over her shots.  She credits Sean Foley for being able to get her swinging that way again and with the mental focus of where to play her shot, what kind of shot to play, etc.

In essence thinking about how to attack the course and greens.  If Lydia can get her putter working again along with her iron game and proximity to the hole, she will do fine.  She will not dominate like she did for that 18 month period a few years back, (there's just too much good competition out there now), but she should be getting herself into contention much more -- and I think we are seeing that in her play this year compared to the previous couple of seasons.

Lydia needs to go back to her first swing coach, just like Tiger. How many majors would they both had won if they didnt mess with a good thing? Those swings were a thing of beauty!

Lydia's original coach from New Zealand apparently was not keen on relocating to the United States for his star pupil.  Notwithstanding this, my hypothesis is that I think it is far too simplistic to suggest that Lydia would have kept on winning at the rate that she had in that 18 month period when she was number one.

Firstly, the competition that has arrived on tour since 2015 has been immense.  Top players today, hit the ball significantly further, have strong iron games and make plenty of birdies.  The one area where Lydia has maintained a relative edge over the majority of the other players has been with her putting.  She has consistently ranked among the very best, the elite on the LPGA in terms of her putting.  Her Putts per GIR has ranged from a personal best of 1.71 to a high of 1.78 or in comparison to the remainder of the field, she has placed number 1 (2016) to 23rd (2019).  Even in her worst year statistically, she has been inside the top 25 on tour.   In this abbreviated season (2020) her Putts per GIR has her ranked 9th (1.77); the biggest difference though for Lydia, is that her Average Driving Distance is now 256.94 yards -- her best ever so far.

Anyway, here is a table of statistics that I compiled on Lydia.  I am going to do something similar for a select few other players for comparison sake.  Maybe it will confirm my hypothesis or suggest different conclusions.

FWIW here are links to Lydia Ko and Anna Nordqvist's WITB from PXG with shaft information provided.

Blimey  - 75gm shafts in her irons.

Mind you, that goes very nicely with woods and driver - less of a weight jump.

Lydia should wear that black long sleeve leather look top on the course.
