Analyze My Numbers

Recommended Posts

Definitely not a passive brag or anything along those lines, but as real world numbers go with decent on course results, how would you critique these driver ball numbers? My SS is better than some, but definitely not “bringing it”, around 102.

Driver: 2016 M2 12*, Grafalloy Blue X, 43.5”

Ball: Tour BRX

Avg Ball Speed: 145

Avg Launch Angle: 17

Avg Spin: 2300

Avg Carry: 245

These are from SkyTrak and seem fairly accurate to my on course results,  but I haven’t found another setup that gives me numbers like these. I don’t think I can expect anything more than this with 100mph SS, what say you? TIA!!!

If your swing speed is 102 and ball speed is 145, then your Smash Factor is 1.42 which is reflected in your 3.5 Index. My recollection is at a 1.45 Smash Factor, one should get about 2.75 yards of carry for each mile per hour of swing speed. Using that generalization (which I am sure others will correct, if wrong):

  • 102 mph x 2.75 = 280.5 yards optimal carry
  • Your Smash Factor efficiency is 97.9% (1.42/1.45), so that reduces the optimal carry to 274.6 yards
  • As a result, you are leaving yards on the table (275-245) with your current setup.

I think you are losing distance due to your launch angle, which should be in the 13-14 range. It could be due to your shaft, which may be "too stiff" at 102 mph swing speed. A change in shaft or a lower lofted head could reduce launch and increase ball speed without requiring increased swing speed or a change in angle of attack.

I look forward to what others have to say.

I know my SS tends to slow throughout a driver session after  about 10 hits or so, so that likely contributed to the slight dropoff in ball speed overall. Funny too, cause when I go to the FlighScope Optimizer, my numbers seem just about perfect for my ballspeed, assuming 1.5 smash.

Edit: I should also add that I LOVE the feel I get from the Blue X shaft, best dispersion in years too. I might be leaving so SS on the table, but the results with it are better than most. Couple that with great feel, and I am set.

I’m confused, the Trackman data and the flight scope data I am able to manipulate don’t match up. Also, why does AoA and dynamic loft factor into the equation at all? Seems like that only handcuffs your spin and launch into a certain range for the TM data. I get 17* launch and low

spin, 2200-2400, that’s all I know. Seems like if they continued the trend on the TM data, it would eventually trend towards the Flightscope optimums?

Maybe SkyTrak uses a similar algorithm to FlightScope, as it seems my best carry numbers coincide with the FS best scenario. Idk, maybe the real world numbers dictate on course results for THAT particular optimal carry. Hmmmmm????

Have you checked your face impact location?  e.g. foot powder spray.  High launch and low spin is typical of a hit high on the face.  Which while giving you good launch and spin numbers, it may be hurting your ball speed.

TM charts are a bit of a simplified look at the optimization issue to judge potential.  I think they assume a certain relationship between AoA and dynamic loft which isn't always true.  And they might also be assuming center face contact is best since that is typically what gives the best ball speed.   So they are not hard and fast 'rules' of what might be best.

Thanks for the input, all. My impact seems fine, pretty centered. 255 carry is about my max out. 17* and 2200 spin on a center hit. Good enough for this hack, I suppose. At least I know I’m not leaving much on the table given how decent my dispersion is.

I hit it further with that LA on SkyTrak, and on the course the results match up well

most times. Low spin at that angle seems fine to me, not trying to be a contrarian. Flight scope optimizer software seems to agree too, but I was wondering if that calculation is wrong. Hmmm....

I have never seen anyone get 2.75 of carry yards/mph club head speed so I would not use that as a 'goal'.  But I agree with the rest of the statements.

Launch is too high for that spin.

I suspect you are losing about 10 yards in the real world if you reduced launch to 14 ish and spin to 2400ish.

the two websites that are good to look at is the graph on a google of "Peter field golf, how does launch and spin affect my driver distance''.  Per this graph, you could optimize 13-14.5 launch and 24-2500 rpms given your ball speed.

the second website is Swing man golf, average golf swing speed chart google.

It shows that pros average around 2.45-2.48 carry yards per MPH club head speed.

Given this, 102 x 2.48 is approx 253 yards carry if you had pro numbers.  You are pretty close already.

I agree with MisterT--small tweaks, probably give you about all you can see in a real world setting.

I hit off TM and flightscope a lot.  Trackman proprietary calculations are by far the longest ego stroking driver distances.  Much more than flightscope but even those are not truly obtainable.  But if I was trying to sell 500-600$ drivers to us each year, year over year, I would definitely own a fitting shop that used TM as it's gold standard!
