Slope change effect on yardage

140yd shot 28ft downhill will play ?yds

100yd shot 24ft uphill will play ?yds

 

Easy answer would be “but a rangefinder with slope” but let’s assume your rangefinder is out of batteries.

You can calculate the distance gain you will experience (compared to sea level) by multiplying the elevation (in feet) by .00116. For example, if you're playing in Reno, elevation (4500 ft.) the increase is about 5% ( 4500 x .00116 = 5.22). SO if you drive the ball 250 yard at sea level. Here in Reno that ball will go 263 yards.

In most cases I either eyeball it or let someone else hit first.

In your first scenario I would drop 2 clubs because of more potential roll out. The uphill I would add 1 club and try to hit it all the way to the hole.

1 yard of elevation change is approximately 1 yard of new target distance.

Going uphill, use the club with new distance including roll out.

Going downhill, use club with new distance with carry only.

 

140 yards with approximately 10 yards of downhill slope = hit the club with 130 yard carry distance.

100 yard uphill approximately 10 yards = hit the club with 110 yard total distance (carry and roll).

 

It's rough rule of thumb.

What I have seen recommended is a one for one impact to effective distance.  So 28 ft. down would play 9 yards less so 131 yards effective distance.  That makes 24 ft. uphill play 8 yards longer or effectively 108 yards. There is obviously variation due to ball flight, but I don't take that into account (I don't vary my flight enough to make it matter).

You need the % or degrees of slope, not the feet downhill/uphill.

Can you not calculate that based on the total amount of elevation change and the length of the hole...

I've been have some good luck with this (slightly) complex formula: a third down, half up. 

 

Going downhill, divide the slope change (28) by 3 (9+) and subtract that from the yardage. The 140 shot becomes a 130. 

Going uphill, divide the slope change (24) by 2 (12) and add that to the yardage. The 110 shot becomes a 112. 

 

Now calculate for wind and lie.
