2 hybrid vs 3 wood?

Recommended Posts

So I won a Sim Max 3 wood in a raffle recently and before hitting it I decided to go demo it thinking it would help gap me between my 2 hybrid and my 3 wood. Honestly, I didn't see hardly any gapping if any at all. I hit my driver around 255-270 depending on the day, sometimes further. My Ping G410 2 hybrid I push to about 225 MAX. I love my hybrid and even off the tee I like to hit it. I just couldn't get a feel for any of the 3 woods I hit, including the G410. Is there some overlap with these clubs? I felt like going Driver directly down to Hybrid left a huge gap but I guess after hitting the 3 wood I guess not. I believe I will just be adding a 4 hybrid as my last club.

I have the same hybrid and carry it the same-ish distance. The only reason the 3W is in my bag is for shots 250+ where my hybrid or 4 iron would have ZERO chance at running up. And even then, give me the right slope and I'm trying to get the 4 iron up there. It doesn't get much use and I'm much more confident with the other long clubs, but I don't really have anything else to put in.

I am not sure what a 4 hybrid would accomplish for you though as it would likely be in between the lofts of your 4 and 5 iron. Sounds like we're in the same boat and I'd reckon it's a fairly common position nowadays.

Same story for me. Putting the 410 driver out there 260-270 on average, and I am hitting it so well that layups off the tee are only considered if the course demands it with some specific trouble in my landing zone. There's not alot of bad driver days or losing confidence in it.

Currently gaming an Adams Super XTD 17* that is just as long off the deck but is super consistent. Off the tee, the 3 wood carries another 10 yards, but in the dry Arizona fairways the XTD is rolling out just as far at 240-250. I can flight it low and hit a stinger type shot as well. Good from the rough. Can hit a high second shot 230 into greens. Just so much more versatile than a 3 wood that I would only hit off the tee once a round if that. Granted, I don't use the 3 wood off the deck. That's not a shot I have any confidence in.

I've been toying with the exact same idea myself.

Having got a decent data set into my shot scope V3 I can see i hit my g400 3h further than my 3w.

My plan at this stage is to look at a some sort of 2h at 17° with the option to turn it down to 16. With added benefit of giving me something to also hit little bullets off the tee with into the wind.

I hit the driver a similar distance to you, with the exception that I’m generally really high spin, so when do get a low spinner, I hit it further on the top end.

Like someone mentioned above, a 3w would likely be a good 10-12 yards further than the 2h if you put it on a tee peg. Off the deck, I, and many others, don’t strike the 3w consistently enough to see that nice gapping. I have much more confidence, and much better gapping, in playing a 18* 5wood turned down to 17 or 17.5 and my hybrid at 19*.

My thoughts are to play with clubs you are comfortable hitting. If you are only losing ~10 yards playing the hybrid over 3 wood but find the hybrid more versatile and confidence inspiring, then go with the 2H. Being 10 yards short of the green in the short stuff on a long par 5 can be an easy up and down for birdie if your short game is dialed in. Probably better off there then spraying a 3 wood pin high in the rough or in a nasty greenside bunker. Just my $.02

A 2 hybrid is generally more like a 5 wood. But there are people who simply can not hit fairway woods. Might look at a 1 hybrid in something like 16-17. If that's what your 2 hybrid already is, then yeah go ahead with the 4.

I generally got similar distances between my 18* 5w and a 19* 3 hybrid, so I assume a 2 hybrid and 3w would be pretty close.  It would depend on how the fairway is running that day for which club would be longer.  My top end of bag right now is 4i, 5w, 3w, D and I get about a 20 yd gap between each on well struck shots off a tee.

I had been considering trying to shorten the gap between my irons and woods by getting a 20* utility iron and a 4w, but I think I am done buying new clubs for this season.  Might be something I look at in the spring.

I hit my last and my latest 3w fairly well, both off the tee and the deck and it's currently the most used club in my bag.  The issue I have is my 3h doesn't really fill the gap well between 4 iron and 3w and the hybrid is only a few yards longer than the 4 iron. 4iron is 21.5', 3h is 20' and 3w is 14-15'.  I should probably replace 3h with a 2h or a 3 iron to get better gapping. I also find I can hit the 3w and the 4 iron a lot more consistently than a hybrid

I would say if you can find the right 3 wood it will help your game out so much. A great club to use off the tee to keep the ball in play, or to fall back on if the driver is off. It will have less spin than a hybrid so off the tee it will be better, it could hurt you a little bit going for par 5's in two, but in most cases it won't.

I think the bottom line is that you do what works for you. If you don’t see much gapping and you hit your Driver and Hybrid fine, it may not be worth having both a 3W and 2H in the bag. 2H to 4H on paper sounds pretty good to me.

For me, I basically replaced a 5 wood with a 2 hybrid years ago and it’s been a great switch.  I hit the 3W like 240-250 and the 2H 220-230. I can hit either off the tee or fairway, depending on my distance needed. It leaves a bit of a gap between my 4i and 2H so I’m grabbing a 3H to give me another option.

As you are a Ping guy, test hit a G410 model 5W. This 5W  comes as 17.5° set loft, and you could tweak it down a tad to 4W loft. It has a 42.5" length, which is 1.75 " longer than your stock 2H shaft.

If you could pick up 15 yards on the 2H, this might be a good bridge. And, it would probably launch higher than the 2H.

Even people with good clubhead speed  like you sometimes find the 4W flies better than the 3W.

OP, it sounds like you are on the right track, and your experience matches mine, even though you swing a bit faster than me.

There is no universal answer here, because it is dependent on a bunch of variables that everybody needs to evaluate for themselves:

First of all, how valuable is a spot in your bag?  Do you have to sacrifice anything to carry the 3w?  Going to a 2h as your second club can allow you to tweak your bag to allow another wedge (or a 4h in your case).

Do you hit "less than driver" off the tee often?  If so, is a 3w "enough less" than driver from the tees and courses you play.  If you find yourself hitting "less than 3w" off a lot of tees, maybe the 3w is wasting a space in the bag.  But...does carrying the 3w make the difference between your Par 5's being "reachable" or not?   But...even if so, realistically, will that lower your strokes gained from that distance enough to be worth taking a spot in the bag that could be used for something more valuable?

Do you struggle just making good, consistent contact with a 3w from the deck?  If so, is contact better with the hybrid?  Contact is king, so if your answer is yes to both of those questions, then you have your answer (unless you need it off the tee).

For me personally, my 16* hybrid is the right amount "less than driver" for the tees I play.  And when I need to hit "as far as possible off the deck," I am absolutely as long, or longer, on average with my 16* hybrid as I am with any 3-wood.  Its just easier for me to hit solid and control trajectory.  Its also better out of the rough and fairway bunkers, better for punch shots out of the trees, and perfect for the longest Par 3's I play.
