BMW Championship at Olympia Fields

Here we go...

Event information

What: BMW Championship
When: Aug. 27-30
Where: Olympia Fields -- Olympia Fields, Illinois

Three things to know

1. Elite course: Olympia Fields has hosted a U.S. Open, PGA Championship and (most recently) a U.S. Amateur, and should play major championship-like depending on the setup. The site of Jim Furyk's 2003 U.S. Open win is brawny, for sure, but it's also nuanced, especially around the greens. It should be a bit of a diversion from a lot of the point-and-shoot tracks on the PGA Tour.

2. BMW curse: Only once in the last nine years has the person who won the BMW Championship gone on to win the FedEx Cup. This seems odd given its proximity to the last event of the year and its list of elite winners. Billy Horschel (2014) is the only golfer to go on to win the FedEx Cup following a BMW Championship win (he also won the Tour Championship that year). Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson (twice), Justin Rose and Jason Day have all failed to pull it off.

3. Rory struggles: One quiet storyline over the course of the last three months has been the relative struggles of Rory McIlroy. I say relative because Rory is graded on a different scale than almost everyone else in the sport, but he has just one top 30 and no top 10s since the PGA Tour restarted in early June. The problems are myriad -- he's struggled at times in every statistical category -- but recently it's been mostly the driver that has given him issues. This would be his worst (again, relative) driving season statistically since 2013 and his second-worst since 2009. He said on Sunday he was going to go home and "try a couple of drivers" to try and get right for this week

Grading the field

There are certainly some big names missing out -- Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood among them -- but it's still an amazing list of the 70 best players throughout the 2019-20 PGA Tour season. There also won't be a cut this week (or next) so we'll see everybody for all four rounds at both events. Grade: A

I should have clarified.  Go BK “in spirit” insofar that DJ crushes his soul.

The way it has been since golf came back, Rory would love a back door Top 10 right now.

“I have to play well, I have to earn my way to East Lake; I haven't done so yet," Woods said Wednesday at Olympia Fields (Illinois) Golf Club, site of the BMW Championship. "I need a good week. If I don't, I go home. It's a big week for me. I'm looking forward to getting out there and competing.

"This golf course is set up more like a U.S. Open than a regular tour event. It's the playoffs, and it's supposed to be hard."

I have to get the ball in play here and put that ball in the right spots," he said. "This is set up more like a [U.S.] Open. With the weather as hot as it is supposed to be, this rough is only going to get more difficult. It's not a golf course where I feel like you can overpower it with driver everywhere. Totally different setup."

Woods would like to get back there (Tour championship) because, "I have some great memories there.'' He also admitted he had some difficulty bringing his game to the course in his three starts since the resumption of play due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"One of the reasons why I delayed it and didn't come back and play earlier is we just didn't know how the protocols were going to be, and was our sport going to be safe to come out here, or were we all going to get sick,'' he said. "I've just now played enough tournaments to try to have an understanding and feel for what's going on. Hopefully I can get it going this week."

How is everyone watching? I've got PGA Tour Live for Amazon Prime (don't get me started) but I don't have cable for the NBC broadcast.

Does anyone know if NBC streams their broadcast like CBS? If not I guess I can get an HD antenna but every single one I've owned has been a piece of crap. I could sign up for Hulu TV for 50 bucks though I'd really rather not.

I told my buddy to bet on DJ, he’s slowly been getting his groove back, and when he’s on, dude is a wrecking ball of talent. Last week was the start of something, not just one impressive week. DJ is here to stay, and for a long while I believe.

Yuuuuge TW fanboy here as well, but my excitement for him will always follow the Masters and Open, his best chances of catching Bear. A BMW win would be huge, no doubt, but the hater nation has been shushed since last year, and now its time to solidify GOAT status or bust.

Can’t wait to see how firm the fairways are and how many huge drives take place after getting 50 yards of roll so we can talk about “dialing back the ball”

Can't wait to see if Brendon Todd take the FedEx Cup with his third win of the season, thereby making all courses on the tour obsolete....

What would we say then.  Brendon is too good at putting? Roll back the putter.

Live close by, and have played the course.  We are in a significant drought right now in Northern Illinois, Olympia Fields should be a brick unless the tour really ramps up the sprinklers.

During the matchup thingy yesterday I was Homa hit a 3w on a long par 4 that seemed to roll out 40 yards.  Idk maybe even more.  Looked firm yesterday.

Yep.  It should be a tough week, especially if the wind gets up at all.  If its another week of fast fairways and receptive greens, then that will be completely manufactured by the tour.  The greens should be firm and difficult right now.
