3/5/7 wood

Trying to find the right gapping.... intrigued after all the 7 wood talk.

would you do a 3/5/7 wood in the bag and drop 4 iron or just simply do a 3 and 7 wood.

I have a 5 wood I love now so hesitant to move on from it. Thinking just add a 7 wood as the GAp between my 5 iron and 5 wood.

also could do hybrid. I’ve always preferred fairways though

Just looking for some thoughts!

i play a 3/5/7 wood and dropped my 4 iron, I didn't see much of a distance difference between my 4 & 5 iron, and i hit my 7 wood so much better then my 4 iron. One of the better choices i have made for my game.

I did the same exact thing a couple months ago.  7w goes high and straight and easy to hit.  No more chunky thin 4 irons or crazy hooking hybrids.  I tried a 7w a few years ago and hated it.  Was a Nike with steel S200 shaft.  Ballooned like crazy.  Went 170 with a pitching wedge trajectory.  Have a 917f2 in 21° and it's great.  Also have one if 18° and it's great, too.  The gapping between my 5i and 7w is about 15-20 yards.  That's manageable.

I've been using a 2 wood 12*  mostly from the tee or a reachable par 5. Then a 5 wood 18* and a 7 wood 21 * . then 4-PW

My average driver is about 275M and 2 wood about 245M, 5 wood 225M and 7 wood 210m 4 is iron 200m.

I find my gaps  to be spot on as 150m is my go to distance with a 7 or 8 iron.

Single digits.

The 7 wood gets the ball to land soft from above.

I play either 16.5* 4 wood and 20.5* 7 wood OR 16* 3 wood, 19* 5 wood and 23* 7 wood.  In either case my next sticks are 4 , 5, 6 hybrids.  They are older models of ping so they replace my 5, 6, and 7 irons.  I'm a single digits cap.

You’ve set your bag up to make it as easy as possible to hit a good ball it seems. ?

Right on ya!

I’m contemplating putting a 7w in the bag instead of the 4i. Not totally convinced yet. But that’s mainly because I can’t find a 7w with as stiff a shaft as I play. (I couldn’t find a 5w with one that I could try, let alone a 7w)

i am in this camp as well, with a slightly different lineup I’ve recently tried. I am playing a 3-plus SZ wood as mainly a second option off the tee, though I’m not afraid to hit it off a good lie. I am liking it for holes where I don’t need driver and/or want to go with higher loft and shorter shaft for more control. Then 4 wood and 7 wood. Hit the 4 wood off any lie and it gets nice carry. The gapping is working and so is the versatility. I can hit a full 7 wood more consistently than a 3 hybrid and I can choke up about 3/4 of an inch to match a 4 iron.

It's going to be tough to find a 7w with a stiff shaft. You either custom order it, or buy a 7W head with an adjustable shaft and swap a 3W shaft in. I bought a Ping G400 7W head, and a Ping G400 3W shaft (Stiff), and created a frankenwood.

Easy to swap shafts with any head. And there are excellent inexpensive options, like Grafalloy Pro Launch Red or Aldila Tour Green or Blue or Aerotech Powercoil. All are cheap, like $50, and have low mid to low torque. You can even pick up older Diamana Whiteboard and Blueboards. All of these will give a stiffer, more solid and stable feel to your 7 wood. Makes it even more of a precision weapon!

1,3,5,7,9 wood in my bag the 9 wood takes the place of a 4I and fills the gap between 5I and 7 wood.  The 5w is mostly from fairway 3 w off the tee on tight holes. The 9w is perfect for me from rough or tight lies. The ball flies high and lands soft is much easier from rough than a 4 I.

I revamped my setup about a month and a half ago and haven't looked back.

TM Sim Max 10.5*

TM Sim 5 Wood

Ping G25 7 wood

TM 24* GAPR Mid

With the length and accuracy that I hit the Sim 5 wood I found I had no use for a longer fwy wood.  At 72 I'm not reaching 5 pars in two anyway and I'd rather strategically place my second where I want it. The G25 7 wood I can choke down and hit a variety of shots  anywhere from 160 to 175.  The GAPR is also a very versatile club even when chipping.

I don't want to cause you angst and pain, but here's my story: I am in my ninth season of playing some variation of 4W + 7W.

Circa 208-09 I shifted from Stiff to Regular in all my clubs. I tried to continue 3W and 5W, or 3W and TM Raylor 3 (similar to hybrid), but 3W just didn't launch high enough anymore. Then came the 4W + 7W (I can actually hit a 4W slightly longer - and more reliably -  than a 3W).

I swapped irons two season ago, and refitted the 4i with a hybrid shaft. This works super as a driving iron, and on good swing days I can hit it from a good fairway lie.

I also carry a 4H that is on my bad list this summer. (This enabled by me only carrying three wedges.)

I'm a senior golfer, and hit a fairway wood off the deck 6-7 times a round. So, I'm more focused on FWs than long hitters who may only hit one off the deck once a round.

You have to go with what works for you. Among seniors some golfers do carry a 3-5-7W mix, while others carry one FW and two or three hybrids. Us older guys don't worry too much about GAPRs, driving irons, etc., (except me with my tweaked 4i).

I use hybrids . 3-6 . The 3 goes as far as my old 5 wood and was straighter. The 3 wood I carry is set to 17 degrees right now. So it’s a 4 wood. I changed out the shaft in my 5 wood to this 4 wood. Now I can’t say it’s the the way to go for you but it works for me.
My dad had a bag full of woods by 80 . He used up to a 12 wood. I miss that man

Yeah it’s going to be custom built, that’s what’s keeping me. I don’t know if it’ll work the way I want and I can’t really give back a custom build.. Might have to go hybrid ?

I've been debating this exact same thing situation. I've got a 19* hybrid that I hit ok 50% of the time.  I've got a SIM 5W that I've adjusted the loft to play closer to a 4W. I can smoke that club off the fairway or the tee, so I'm leaning towards getting a 7W and selling off the hybrid. I'd rather have a nice high ball flight from a 7W than a mid-flight hybrid that rolls off the back of the green.
