I need shaft profiles for some shafts, please!

I've spent most of this season fine-tuning my clubs. The Mizuno shaft optimizer recommends the PX LZ 6.0. I can't argue with the results but man do they cause my elbows and forearms to flare up to the point that I can't straighten my arms. Is it something that will go away once I get used to them? I tried a ProSoft insert in one club and it was junk. I just put the Elevate Tour w/VSS into two clubs thinking it would help and it did not.

So what is the profile of the LZ? Where is the stiffness? Butt? Mid? Tip?

I have Callaway Apex 19 hybrids with the stock Catalyst hybrid shaft and they are pretty good too. Maybe a little too high.

What is the profile of this shaft? Where is the stiffness? Butt? Mid? Tip?

I just ordered three Mavrik Pro hybrids with Even Flow Blue 85 in them.

What is the profile of these? Where is the stiffness? Butt? Mid? Tip?

Last is the driver, I don't have a clear point and shoot driver. I have a G410 LST 9* with Riptide Blue CB and cannot get along with it. Something about it is just not right.

So that's why I want to know the profile of the LZ 6.0 so I can find similar shafts to try in the rest of my clubs.

TIA!

If steel shafts are causing you pain and joint issues, the it's probably time to look into graphite iron and wedge shafts.  Graphite absorbs the shock from impact and is much easier on your body than steel.  A good place to start would be the Recoils, IMO.  Good luck with your search.

Thanks! Been there, done that already. I'm not ready for the switch yet.

Very unlikely.  Agree with @drumdude96  It's either play graphite or deal with the pain.

As far as shaft profiles go, golfshaftreviews.com is the main independent source for that data.  But it requires a subscription to access.  And the lower cost subscription has some short comings. I not a fan but there are plenty of people here that feel it is useful so may be worth it to you.

Just in case, which graphite shaft did you try?   Not all graphite are the same and if it was some stock graphite iron shaft you happened to try in the store, then there are much better options available for the players who need stiffer and heavier shafts.

I found the recoils to play like a steel shaft without the jarring on the body.  Which Recoil did you try?

Most would say the Nippons are the steel shaft to look at for your issue. However, it's still a steel shaft. If I had the money I would go back to Recoil from Project X.

I think you should really look again at graphite and stay off mats. Good luck.

Which ones?   Last I checked there were 13 different versions of the Recoils and about 7 or 8 of the steelfibers.

And what was the problem with them?

Recoil 95 and SF 110 cw.

I just didn’t like them. I do all of my own club work and don’t have much experience working with graphite. I’m not going to pay for an up-charge and hope the OEM gets it right.

If you want to be more specific, it might be possible to help you find something that might work better.  That's the only reason I asked.  But that's completely up to you whether you want that kind of help or not.  I'm not trying to push you into anything.  I just know from personal experience how much it sucks to deal with the pain various joint issues.

FWIW, an initial build with graphite in irons isn't all that much different than with steel, you just need to use different types of tip weights.  Other than that, it's no different from working with graphite shafts for woods and hybrids,  which, if you do all your own club work, you likely already have some experience with that.

  • 2 weeks later...

the project x lz is soft middle, stiff butt and tips. an active middle.

that sounds like nippon modus3 120s. however, JP finds nippon 1050gh S to feel softer than modus3 on the joints, which may be a little strange.

the rifle fcm 6.0 flighted would feel softer to JP than the modus 120s, but they are a soft tip shaft....

First, if you haven't investigated the use of a TheraBand FlexBar then I suggest you check out videos on exercises to address both golfer's elbow and tennis elbow using the FlexBar.  I use it at the start of the season to strengthen all of the muscles/tendons/ligaments in my arms/wrists/hands as a preventative measure, but I found this therapy when I was also suffering from the same kind of pain you are describing.

Second, as noted in a previous post, all steel shafts are not created equal.  Nippon has quite the reputation for feeling smoother and reducing some of the impact.  The Recoil proto shafts are also noteworthy for their ability to replicate the performance of a steel shaft without the impact on your joints.

Seconded on the flexbar. The reverse Tyler Twist is Great for my elbow pain.
