FedEx Final 30 Format

I was just thinkin bout dis....?

At first it seems ridiculous. Nobody seeded at worse than 5 (starting at -5) would seem to have a remote shot .

Then 6-10 start at -4. So, they don’t really have a chance but maybe a Hail Mary.

So, it’s really between 5 guys battling with the top 3 having an even  huger advantage.

We are used to tournaments with 100 plus people all having the same chance. Even with only 30, it seems unfair that so few have a shot but the bottom line is

At least it’s a battle between 4 or 5 guys with  the winner winning the FC and the 15MM. And the rest are all playing hard for the best shot to make the most money.

I will be the contrarian and like it. Makes a whole lot more sense as they come down the stretch knowing what a player needs to do. Much better than needing Steve Sands popping in with “up to the minute updates”.  Saw an interview with Rory the other day and he seemed to like it. Odd the first day but normal after that and everyone knows where they stand.

You have to remember that every single format has been dissed here on wrx. Folks can’t seem to decide if the FedEx Cup should reward a seasons worth of play or be like a real playoff series and reward the hot player.

I actually like it, too.  My only change would be that number one starts at even and they go up from there. I know there’s no real difference, but I don’t like the idea of starting under par.

I don’t like it.    I love an underdog story.  And this pretty much makes that impossible.

I can't stand it. A contrived playoff for golf doesn't work. It's made even worse with constant updates on projected places after every holed putt. Even with 3 more rounds to go before the dust settles on who the top 30 will be. They should just completely jump the shark and have the top 5, that actually have a shot to win, play with each other and send the rest off in a separate best of the rest money grab. If I had to watch live, I would never watch another golf tournament again. Recorded events is a godsend.

This is the worst part of golf broadcasts. NBC is doing it, basically, after every birdie they show. If after 9 or a guy finishes, ok. But Hideki makes the eagle on 1 Saturday and immediately, we get an update. I say this as a guy that doesn't mind the playoff or the best guy all year getting a head-start in the Tour Championship.

Blade!

Think of the TC as the 4th Quarter of a football game with the preceding events as earlier Qs of the same game.

DJ abd others are going into the 4rth Q with a lead they earned earlier in the “game”  but other guys had a shot to play closer as well.

Thought one of the benefits of doing work needed to be good enough to play at an elite level was not having to play in handicapped events?? Might as well move this thing to Myrtle Beach and be done with it ?

I don’t mind it, if it is supposed to be the proper conclusion to a playoffs then I am not sure how else they are supposed to do it. There has to be some kind of reward or advantage for the guys who have performed best before now, otherwise the whole season before East Lake becomes somewhat pointless.

That’s not a bad idea. 4 weeks cumulative score.     I could go for that.

I read a proposed playoff system lately....the writer proposed a 3 week event  starting with the top 125 and eliminating the 8 worst total scores every day with the preplayoff top 10 guaranteed the 3 events.

Article is better than my description...

I’m completely fine with it.  The Performance over the regular season has to count for something.  The other players can still win,  they just have to play better.

I agree . I like it for the same reasons.

I dont think Bill Haas being a FedEx champion makes a lot of sense either. no disrespect to him as a person he just wasn't a dominant force that season

You have several events where it's a fair playing field for everyone.  For the FedEx cup the regular season needs to matter

They did have the playoffs correct to begin with. The number 1 points player going into East Lake got a 2 million bonus for being #1 and then the actual tournament was scratch for everyone. Why they changed it and why some feel it's great to have a professional hdcp tournament is beyond me. For me personally, the finish at the BMW between DJ and Rahm was the highlight of the season FedEx wise. Next week will be a farse, compared to what we just watched.
