Adding/cutting 0.5 inch from irons (Srixon & Ping) - big deal?

Hi,

I am planning to add 0.5 inch to a standard Srixon iron and cut 0.5 inch off a Ping wedge which is now +1.0.

Will this make a big difference other than length? Especially, if ordered custom, would these makers use different head weights or only cut the shaft to spec?

Well you know it's going to change the swingweight by 3 points or thereabouts in each case.

For the wedge just choke down 1/2" and hit a few shots, if you can't feel any difference then it doesn't matter. For the iron you can't temporarily add 1/2" but it's a similar magnitude change. In theory, one swingweight point is about the absolute minimum anyone is capable of detecting. So three points is noticeable but not huge.

In terms of stiffness, the lengthened or shortened clubs may play a tiny bit (couple cpm maybe?) different flex. But 1/2" difference at the butt for most shafts will be a very, very hard to detect difference in flex.

I have never personally been able to detect 1/4" or one SW point, ever. When lengths change 1/2" and SW changes 2-3 points I generally think I can feel something different but it's never been major. Any more than 1/2" and 3 SW points and I'd want to try it before committing (unless the clubs as they are simply don't work for you).

also the lie angle will be different so you may need to get them adjusted.

There are a few things as others have posted that change, swing weight , lie angle, etc, but I have cut clubs shorter and added length to clubs and the thing that I go by is how do you hit them. Kinda simple but its what counts, if you are putting the ball where you want it don't worry about the rest of it. If not, no big deal since apparently they weren't working to begin with or you wouldn't be cutting them up. I'm playing irons I shortened by 1" and really like them " for now".
