Course Membership

Recommended Posts

I'm all about saving money and have thought a lot about a course membership. I just have a few concerns. The first is that I would get tired of playing the same course over and over again. Second (more of a question for those with memberships), how does a membership to a single course improve your overall game and not just your ability at that specific course? Last, the possibility that an injury happens or I move and I just shelled out a few hundred backs and it was wasted. Thoughts?

My two cents.

1. Does the course give you different shots or is it repetitive? If it has a variety of shots, both off the tee and into the greens, then the chances are you won't get bored. Different tees also helps here.

2. Again, depends on the course. Does it have bunkers, greens that require different types of chip/pitch shots depending on your miss? If there is variety then your game will improve.

3. Most clubs have a policy for suspending your membership due to injury. SOL if you move.

Saving money and course memberships are incongruent.  But to be clear you are talking about a private course membership vs a one time fee to get "50 rounds" or some semblance of that.  As far as a value proposition a private golf membership wont usually make fiscal value sense.  One time one price pre-purchased rounds or playing privileges can have more value based on what you get.  For me my handicap has historically been 2-4 points less when I belong to a private club.  I practice much more.  Never got tired of the course, as I would play outside courses frequently. Half of all the rounds I played on my home course would constitute practice.  Hitting many shots from many lies and locations.  Playing every set of tees, especially on par 3's.  With all that said, I have never belonged to a private club where I came out ahead as a value proposition, but Im not retired.

I believe this is it in a nutshell.

The one thing I'd add :  are you playing with friends or planning on making new golf buddies?  I play multiple courses now because I find I enjoy golfing with friends over having a private membership and golf with "other" golfers.

I agree 100% with what others have stated  ....  joining a private club is never a value proposition.

And as you have clearly stated that you are all about saving money then 1000000% joining a private club is not for you.

Your questions 2 and 3 are not relevant as your point 1 will never be met by joining a private club.

This is 1000% correct. I would have to golf everyday of the week for my course to pencil out, but, the other benefits outweigh the financial. Nice course, easy tee times, big group of buddies to play with etc. I also play about twice as much as I normally would because of our family membership. It’s paid for so you better use it!

I laughed a good bit at number 3. I'll have to look more in depth at the courses around me to see if it's worth it as far as the different playable shots.
