TC-201 or Combo with MB/MC?

JB_007

Recommended Posts

I've recently decided to treat myself to my first set of Miura irons and after a fitting, I was given a few options, and I was hoping I could get some opinions.

My fitter told me he recommends I go with the TC-201 4-PW, but also said I could opt to combo the TC-201 with either MB-101/MC-501 in 6-PW. I've had to 2 fittings now for these irons, but will say, I swung well both times, so I'm not sure on an off day what it will look like.

Just curious to those who have played these irons,  will I miss the feel of the MB / MC if I opt for the TC-201 in a full set? Is the level of forgiveness that much more with the TC? He said the MC-501 offers a little more forgiveness, but not much to the MB?

If you're on average a good striker of the ball, a combo with the muscle backs is a good choice. The size difference isn't that great in the lower irons, but as the clubs get longer the difference becomes more apparent. I choose to go with the 8-PW in mb as I felt the mb's became too 'small' for my eye above that. Pure shots with either will feel very similar, it's the missed ones that you really pay for by lost yardage on the mb's.

I am currently considering TC-201 (4,5,6) and MC-501 (7-PW) with Modus 120.

I am just wondering if I should go with TC-201 or CB-301 for 4,5,6 irons.

Any input will be appreciated.

if you're doing fitting, take note of much how distance/ball speed you lose on bad & mis-hit shots. when you toe/heel/shank - there is no FEEL about it.

If ball speed lost is not much, then go MB. If you lose a lot of ball speed with mis-hits, then go TC/MB

Question in my mind would be, can you live with the difference in ball speed from mishitting a MB vs. TC/CB

I had Chip Usher build me a combo set of TC-201 (4-6) and MB-101 (7-PW) with the MMT 105TX (ss*1)  Couldn't be happier with my decision

Chip is the best for all things Miura.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Bumping this as have a follow-on question and looking for a bit of advice.

I am very close to ordering my first Miura set. I am contemplating either a full 4-PW MC-501 set or a combo 4-7 TC-201 and 8-PW MB-101.

How does forgiveness compare in the long irons (4-5) of the MC-501 vs. the TC-201?

I have hit all - but as I only hit the 6 iron during the fitting I am always skeptical regarding how well that indicates the playability of the longer irons.  I play to a scratch and my iron play is likely the strength of my game, so while I can technically handle anything - I am really looking for which set has the best chance of producing the best scores.

I am maybe leaning MC-501 - partially based on overall looks but also because I like the opportunity to swap the 4-5 iron out for a JPX Forged or Srixon 4/5 iron.  Not that I couldn't in the combo set, but not sure I would like having 3 different model irons in the bag.  This is partially due to forgiveness but also because for gapping reasons I would like to have a 4 iron closer to 22 degrees and bending the MC-501 that far would yield negative effective bounce.  I have a couple 220-230 yard shots at my home course and not interested in moving away from my driving iron which is more like 240 carry.

On the gapping issue - I could order a 3 iron instead of a 4 and bend the 5 iron 1 degree strong.  That would give me a 22/26/30 degree 4/5/6 irons (ignoring the number on the head).

The MC-501 long irons are easier to hit compared to other muscle backed irons. There is little forgiveness heel-toe but there is mass down low to get the ball higher on properly struck shots and not lose too much distance on something a couple of grooves thin. If you're hitting from rough and hit high on the face, they are dreadful (as with most clubs in this category).

Verses the TC-201 Miura appears to state in their own product catalogue that the MC-501 are more forgiving, which i'm not feeling personally. That being said I flat out didn't like the feel of the TC-201 so i didn't hit very many of them at my fitting regardless of any benefit. Realistically, how much would tech (and let's not forget these are both still single piece forged clubs) save you over the lifetime ownership of the irons? It's like an Aston Martin or a Bentley, pick the one you prefer since they're both so close in their segment.

I’m going for a set of TC-201’s 3-PW & a set of MC-501’s 3-PW and will compare. From my initial testing with fitting clubs only the TC-201 felt better and performed better for me hands down. Ball speed and distance was drastically different on most hit shots and solid shots. TC-201 felt easier to hit and more forgiving for me. Got such a good deal on them the MC-501’s will be a once in a blue moon type of set unless blending them makes sense down the road and my ball striking improves.

Because these both took so long to get. I bought a set of ZX7’s off golfwrx with my exact specs of everything I usually play. +1/4” 2 flat $-tapers (pure’d) 130X they have been so good for me I ended up selling both sets. ZX7’s just perform, look and feel great.

I added a ZX4 Mark 2 4 & 5 and wow! Went with $-Taper SS once in the X flex and couldn’t be a better long iron for getting a perfect high trajectory with my long irons yet not spinny at all.

Then jump to a Ping iCrossover 2i and while I don’t love the offset of any of them they just do exactly what I need them to do so I can deal with the offset.

Considering going full Fuji Axioms in the wedges to 4 iron. Have the 105X in the 2i and good lord it’s sweet!
