First Time Playing with TP5X - Wow

Recommended Posts

I played a member member with my wife last week.  It was a 2 day 6-6-6 tournament with alternate shot on the cards.  To make it easier on her I played a TP5X which is her ball.  I normally use a Pro V1.

I couldn't believe how straight I hit that ball.  I'm typically a very erratic driver but the first day I hit every fairway.  The next day I hit every fairway again but with my driver.  This weekend I picked up a dozen and once again drove it great.  I had a really bad swing where I was trying to carry some high trees  just to see if I could.  I came out of the swing and hit a really bad wipe off my back foot.  As soon as I hit it I announced that the ball was a goner expecting it to flight over the rough into the trees.  To my surprise it landed in the fairway, and hopped into the right rough about 2 yards in.  I couldn't believe.  I fully expected with that swing the ball to be 30 yards right of the fairway.  I did hit one bad hook with my 4 wood but that's been my worst drive in 4 rounds.  It's not uncommon for me to miss every fairway with my driver.

I find distance control a little off and I'm over spinning them a bit but that's me.  I also have to get used to the new feel and sound.

I have a hard time believing the ball really has that much of an impact.  Has anyone else had a similar experience with this ball or another brand?

I found a mint tp5 ball on the course the other day and played it on the back nine (I usually play ProV1x). I found it to be softer around the greens and it held a great line in the wind. I immediately became a fan and bought a few sleeves along with some X to try.

Is there a difference between the TP5X and the 2019 Pix TP5X?  I picked up a box and even though I am old, I could not compress this ball at all, I gave these to my son who swings it hard he could not get any spin, he literally left 2 sleeves on the tee box for someone else to try.

"Compressing the ball" is not a thing.  A golfer's swing speed is irrelevant to compressing the ball. Yet, the myth lives on.

Ok, I "feel" and "hear" that this ball is very hard compared to other tour offerings. Better?

Bridgestone Tour B and the Taylormade TP5 have the market mastered for straight golf balls with plenty of green side spin.  The slightest side spin and ProV1's are going to go sideways.  They come up short on distance with irons and ballon in and don't hold their line in the wind nearly as well as the Bridgestone and Taylormade either.  That said, I've found the TP5x to be ultra-low spinning with irons, and have gotten some "fliers" when I wasn't expecting it with them.  I think it only takes a slight loss of spin with a TP5x on an iron shot to drop below the normal spin range for that club given how low spin it already is, resulting in a surprise and getting 10-15 more yards than I was expecting, like a flier.  In general it was already about 5 yards longer with irons due to the lower spin.

The current model is firmer than the previous version but still less than a ProV1x or a Srixon Z Star XV.
