when to know if it a length or lie issue

I have been doing work for years but I am never sure if I should change the length or lie for someone, easy to change lie.

Length - take a comfortable stance a grip a club where YOU want to. This may mean your hand is partially off the grip.

Lie - go by ball flight. Push/slice too flat; hook too upright... Assuming your path is neutral. 

 

Fitting matrix are 99% BS. Do those two things and I guarantee it will change your game for the better.

All depends on the players posture to be honest. Some will adjust their posture to a clubs lie angle and or length,  some will not. Find the length that puts them in a good posture then bend lies from there, in my opinion.

Lie is something that is easy to check dynamically and adjust completely independent of playing length.  So there shouldn't be any point of contention between the two.

 

 

 

Length (especially the longer clubs) is more about the consistency of the impact and the results.   But one has to be careful because length, shaft weight and swing weight all have to work together.  If one changes, the others may have to be adjusted as well.    Here are a couple of good reads on length fitting I hope you might find helpful.

 

Howard's tutorial is a good starting place and although it's titled for drivers it works for all the longer clubs.
