Installing grip with air compressor help

Truok

Recommended Posts

I had a similar issue recently. Blown on several dozen sets if grips with no problems until recently. Had the last few inches of the butts slipping. Tried several different things to no avail. Finally just ordered some double sided water activated tape and just used it on the butt end. It worked but i wouldnt use that stuff again, it was difficult to handle. Its almost like i got a batch of grips with the rubber just stretched out enough, or out of spec.

Maybe put a inline moisture filter on the end of your hose, to dry out the line and avoid moisture added to the inner wall during installation? Use the "driest" masking tape possible, no waxy or shiny topside. "Press and roll" the grip after installing, working your way from the butt end down to the bare shaft, in an attempt to work out air bubbles. Beyond that, just use grip tape and solvent, the old fashioned way. The clear double-sided tape I use for a normal solvent install works for air removal as well, if I'm careful. Ymmv

Do you think maybe that there IS a reason not one major manufacturer blows on grips?

How about trying one simple thing.  Try using grip tape.

Pure and Star are the only grips designed to be put on with air.  I know that will cause a lot of debate but I'm sure if someone reached out to Golf Pride and asked the best way to install their grips it wouldn't be with air.

I have been using air for years and very rarely have had an issue with slippage after installation. Here is what I do:

1. Obviously remove any old tape and residue first left from the old grip

2. I mix up a drop of JOY dish washing soap and a little water in a small cup and then stir / dabble with a small paint brush to get it sudsy

3. I use the 1-1/2" white medical tape as it is textured and gives the grips something to hold on to. I run a strip ( lengthwise ) along the bottom and then again along the top.

4. Apply a small amount of the sudsy soap mixture with a small paint brush to the top and bottom of the taped section.

5. Then just slide the tip of the grip over the shaft, apply air into the end and push the grip on.

Very easy, no mess and I use this same method to install my Jumbomax grips with no issues.

I got brand new clubs from srixon about a month ago, 5 out of the 7 grips they installed with tape and solvent, weren't cured.  I could spin the butt of the grip almost completely in a circle. Took them 3 days to arrive form when they shipped them so even with 3+ days they never cured.  So even using grip tape there can be issues.

Could be the grips themselves.  Years ago Lamkin came out with a grip that was deep green with a black top that no matter what was done slipped and twisted.  Lamkin had a grip display at one of the expos that I attended.  I told them about that particular grip and they said they never had that problem. So I picked the one they had on display and twisted it half way around the shaft butt.  I got a 'deer in the headlight' look after that.  It was discontinued shortly after that.  LOL

I think it was the grips. A think it was slightly larger inside diameter on the lower hand than should be combined with a taper in the shaft near the lower hand. I had double sided tape on hand so I just built the grips up with 3 wraps of tape but 2 extra wraps just under the lower hand that was twisting, put double sided tape in top of that, and used the compressor to install without any solvent. They are on very secure now.

This is how I put all my grips on. I like either pure pro or tour velvet and I use 2 layers of blue painters tape and make sure the grip is all the way seated at the top of the shaft. Stretched just to the point of some tension on the grip and I’ve never had one slip after installation.  Ymmv but it works for me.  It’s a great way to save money for those of us who like to tinker with shafts etc.

I've used air to put on some putter grips and occasionally a normal grip if I'm just tinkering with something and know it's not permanent.  But my question is if you are putting grips on for players who are competing in higher level am events or even professional events, if a grip that is put on with air slips, and they don't know it and possibly continue to use it, isn't that a penalty?  Granted nobody but the player would know, but in golf we are supposed to police ourselves.  I'd just hate to know I caused that player a penalty or even DQ so I never use air for someone else's clubs I'm working on.

I have had several of my GO CP2 Wrap midsize grips slip at the butt end. I have tried masking tape as well as s painters tape.  My solution was about 1.5-2" of double sided grip tape at the end and use air.  Have had no issues since. Probably could get away with an inch.

I blew off a putter grip yesterday and removed only the tape, not the adhesive residue.  Why go through all the work of removing it?  I made it slippery with some grip fluid and blew the grip back on with an air compressor after shortening the shaft two inches with the chop saw.

Blowing Winn Dri-Tac undersized (ladies) grips is a great way to get them on normal sized shafts.  I barely got one on the first time using tape.  Then I trashed a grip using tape.

I've since blown them two normal sized shafts without a problem.

I'm having trouble recently getting cord grips aligned properly using air, with the butt end line slightly off (couple mm) from the bottom end line. Looking at the texture pattern, the grips twist slightly while putting them on about 2-3" down from the butt end and it's always around the same spot. I'm helping the grip on about as straight on as I can, some of these grips just always want to seem to twist into that position. Bringing them off a bit then pushing back on doesn't really help either.

Never had this problem with all rubber grips or even hybrid grips like the Z5. I'm going to try a little spray of mineral spirits into each end of the trouble grips before reinstalling just to loosen things up a bit.

I've seen a warning somewhere about not blowing on Winn grips with an air compressor. Anybody know what the issue is?

I've never seen that warning but I do find Winn grips are tougher to blow on which I think is due to them being stiffer than all rubber grips.

You likely have air bubbles formed when you are installing the grips.  This is probably due to having too much PSI.  You should try to get in between 50-60 PSI on the air compressor.  I also would not clean out the inside of the grips.  That can make them slippery and they may never quite install correctly.   And don't use any solvent.

I've probably installed over 2,000 grips using an air compressor with either no tape or just painter's tape and I think may 6 or 7 times I've had an issue with the grips slipping afterward.

The GripMaster USA grips are almost impossible to install with an air compressor.  But virtually every other grip you can install just fine as long as you don't use too much air pressure.

I have installed dozens of GM grips with painters tape and air. I use a mild dishsoap/water solution to aid sliding them on. Only ones I had issues with were the Signature ones which were sewn MUCH tighter than any of the others. Roos, Master Perf and Wraps go on fine. The OP just needs something to add a bit of tack. I think the hairspray hint would help.

This confuses me as I watched my buddy pull and place grips on with air. It amazes me each time. The first thing is making sure the grips are not stretched out when being pulled off the clubs. He uses a minimal amount of air to pop the grip, then he reduces the pressure and glides the grip off with ease. Not sure how your grips are spinning because the explanation is that the grip should still fit snug enough not to spin.
