Mizuno Feel (Observations)

Recommended Posts

I'll make this brief, I was a long time owner of MX-300 irons with KBS Tours (stiff). I made the switch this spring to the MP20 MMC with Modus 120 (stiff). I really like the new setup, but it's definitely taken some time to acclimate to the differentiation in shaft profile and weight. Point is, the feel of the MX-300s, when hit on the screws, is/was the best feeling response I've ever experienced. It felt better than the MP-20 blades (nominally) and the 919 Tours. Is it possible that the feel is more associated with both shaft type/weight and and head construction? For the record, the MX-300 was a head that was constructed of ALL 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel, like the blades.

You are correct about the head construction.

I've been playing Mizuno for almost 20 years.  MX-23, then JPX-825 Pro and now MP-54.  Have hit to many other models to list here.

Up through and including the JPX 825 series, the heads were all 1025e.  Starting with the 850 series, Mizuno added Boron to the heads.  Stronger metal = thinner/hotter face = more distance.  But that changed the feel.  I bought the 825 Pros over the 850 Pros b/c of the feel.

I'm not sure when they started adding Boron to the MP line, but the MP18s and MP20s have it.

So your MP20 MMC have the Boron infused.  Metal is stronger, face is hotter, but the feel is different.

Reviews of the JPX-921 line show they switched from (1025e + Boron) to Chromoly alloy to allow for even hotter faces.

I may stand corrected, but I don't believe the MP-20 Blades nor MMCs have boron.

From a review: "Fully Grain Flow Forged HD from 1025E mild carbon steel, the MP-20 Blade features a Satin+Mirror finish designed to look sophisticated while reducing glare at address."

I got fitted this May for new Irons and Driver - for KBS Tour S in my HMBs and Diamana S+ 70g stiff btw. I spent most of the time trying out different shafts to see what feels best for me.  What became pretty obvious was the following: In order to feel good for me (I’d describe it as soft, compliant, pleasing), the bend profile of the shaft is more important than anything else, that’s why I play these shafts with relatively soft tip sections.
And that might be the reason why the modus (stiffer tip section, overall very unique bend profile) feels different than the KBS tour (softer tip section) to you. I didn’t like it at all btw.

Yes, finally, MX-300 owner here. I completely agree with u, mate.

It was my second set of irons, and I played it for almost a decade before switching to Miura.

I loved that set, and still do. Mizunos are known for their soft irons, and that set is an exemplary example. They play even softer than my Miuras.

Only if my vanity did't get the better of me, I would have never switched to Miura.

Now they are sitting in my closet collecting dust. Maybe I'll take them out again someday...
