I don't think it was nasty. Surely we've all experienced having to hole out when we've either misheard our opponent or they've wandered off? I play enough Matchplay to hole out when I'm unsure. I've even had an opponent yell out when I had a 10cm putt when he was engrossed in his card and realised he hadn't conceded the putt.

We'll probably go to our graves not knowing for sure what Peterson was thinking.  But I'll stick with what I saw and my conclusion.

It doesn't matter what Pettersen was thinking. It was Lee who wasn't thinking when she picked her ball up.

There are definitely some behaviors that are *allowable* under the rules that I might consider bad sportsmanship.

E.g.:  Matchplay opponent is two inches ahead of the tee marker.  You see it.  Let him tee off.  See it's a good shot, then make him replay it.

Match play is a different animal. Experienced match play opponents don't generally do what you suggest. Inexperienced match play opponents don't even know the Rules. 

 

Here's what the Rules ask of us:

 

R1.2a. Conduct Expected of All Players, All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:

 

Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play. 

 

Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.

 

Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course.

(1) Player Responsibility for Applying the Rules. Players are responsible for applying the Rules to themselves:

Players are expected to recognize when they have breached a Rule and to be honest in applying their own penalties. If a player knows that he or she has breached a Rule that involves a penalty and deliberately fails to apply the penalty, the player is disqualified.

 

If two or more players deliberately agree to ignore any Rule or penalty they know applies and any of those players have started the round, they are disqualified (even if they have not yet acted on the agreement).

 

Nowhere are players encouraged to make up new rules or standards of conduct.

you asked for an example of behavior allowable under the rules that I personally find unsportsmanlike. I gave it. Not sure how relevant your last post is to that.

Ah, "personally," now that's a different matter. You're certainly welcome to invent your own standards.

 

I've played some match play and refereed quite a bit of match play and have never seen anything like you describe. I've seen careless mistakes called out and careless mistakes overlooked. That's how match play works.

 

The Rules ask players to abide by them, to be courteous to each other and to care for the course. As a player and a referee, I see it all of the time. (Though, don't get me started on "little league dads" in junior events.) ?

LOL, I don't care what she thinks (even though I've always liked her) except if I'm in her presence I'll agree with whatever she says - she could snap me like a twig!
