JPX 825 Pro - time to upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Been gaming the 825 pros for about 7 years now and I’m generally happy with them. But I’m wondering if it’s worth the money to get into a new set of Mizunos. Anyone know how the MP-20s/MMC or the new JPX forged line compares? All specs being equal(loft, length etc), are they more forgiving? Longer? 9 handicap here.

Diving into a new Mizuno iron is worth it. The 921F, HMB or MMC would be my starting point. I think you’ll find you get more forgiveness and distance out of the new models.

If you’re looking for the best deal you can get a near mint set of JPX 900 hot metals  really cheap. In my opinion the next two JPX hot metal offerings haven’t really changed all that much

I gamed 825 Pros for years.  Solid irons.  Upgraded a few years ago to MP-54s, which I am still gaming.  I did hit the 919 JPX line at Golf Galaxy, but decided I preferred the feel of my MPs.

The 921- or 919-series of JPX irons are probably your starting point.  Similar look, minimal offset, etc.

I read some where that with the 921 forged, they switched from 1025e carbon steel to Chromoly alloy steel.  Gives a hotter face and more distance. Some of the reviews question whether the feel will be as soft as Mizzys are known for.

The 919 Forged and Tour still use the same 1025e that's in your 825 Pros.  But with the 919, they are infused with Boron.  (I think they started this with the 850 line).  This makes the metal harder & allows for a thinner, hotter face.   But I think that's why I prefer my MP54, the Boron doesnt feel the same IMO.

The MP20 MMC and MP18 MMC might also be worth a look.  I think the HMB may be a bit to oversized for your taste but YMMV.  To me the HBM seems like the next gen MP-H4 or MP-H5.

You will likely pick up some distance (I'd say half to a full club length) no matter what model you upgrade to - hotter faces = more distance.  I don't think you will see significant gains in forgiveness.  The 919 Forged have a higher Maltby Playability Factor (MPF) score.  The 919 Tour and MMCs score lower.

If nothing else, its worth a test drive. You may come away with a newfound appreciation for your 825 Pros.  I still have my set, sent them up north to live at my buddy's house so I don't have to fly with my sticks.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

If you can find some MP 18 MMCs for cheap, give those a try - I think they're an incredible player's iron, and at two years old might be pretty cheap.
